    Same start town/city?

    Hi guys

Just recieved 2 hardcopys of this game that i bought a few days ago for myself & my son

Anyway ive decided to roll a healer & my son wants to roll a tank, is there anything we should know before starting out as we want to start in same area, ive read a little about it & it says someting about what race you choose decides where you start?

Ive gone for for a conjurer (lalafell) but i think he wants to roll a roegadyn, does this mean we wil both start completely different areas :s ?

Also as a conjurer, i know my main role will be healing, but for the times i solo is conjurer able to solo ok?

& finally.. pvp (sore subject i know!) but ive always liked pvp in mmorpgs & just wondered if there are any plans for pvp in this game if so any idea what kind, i much prefer the open world or large scale type of pvp (not this instanced/arena BG cr@p!) that we see far too much of in the likes of wow/rift & all the other 1001 clones etc!

    Ty in advance guys

class determines where your starting city is and you can not be conj and start in same city as gld or mrd
oh and about pvp, rift and wow both have more open pvp then ff14, but ff14 will have instanced pvp soon, im not sure how many players per team, maybe someone else knows that information

Well so far I've seen 4v4 pvp. But as for the starting cities, the only healer role starts in Gridania, which none of the tanks start. You can alternatively start in Limsa Lominsa as an Arcanist as they have the ability to heal as well (but are not considered healer role, considered damage dealer) and your son a Marauder (tank). When first get instances to divide you by role, you'll be lvl 10, so you can change to the proper healer role anyway. Although be it LL is an island, so you'll need to complete the lvl 15 dungeons to get to the other cities. Of course, there's nothing wrong with healing outside of instances as an arcanist and get the Scholar job, which is a healer role.

did they not think that friends/family would be playing this game together!

Having to start in different places unless we choose same race/class (which would be a little backwards!) until we are higher level aint good, i now know theres a way around as you guys mentioned, but still.. its seems complicated to do that when all i wanna do is group up with my son from the start as hes new to mmorpgs so wanted to show him the ropes etc & have some fun grouping with him!

    im not too impressed!

but thanks for info anyway guys, appreciated

It has nothing to do with race. You can be any race you want and start in any of the starting cities. The only reason the classes are separated is because of the class quests. Anyway, your son can always go Lancer or Bard or he can go Conjurer too. You don't have to keep those classes all the way to 30, you could level them to 15 or something and head to another city to pick up the class you want to play as.

How can you be unimpressed with the game before understanding the system?

EDIT: if your son wants to tank he can go Conjurer for 15 levels and then travel to Ul'dah and pick up Gladiator. For Paladin you need Gladiator level 30 and Conjurer level 15.

It is a bit off that you can't all start in the same area, but I think this gives the game a more diverse feel. I hated "noob island" in tera. The fact that EVERYONE starts there and people troll the hell out of you there. I think this game gives a good pace at learning an MMO till the 1st dungeon... that's pretty much when everyone meets up anyway. Let your son experience the game and ask you if he needs help, but sometimes when you have experienced players with noobs... the noobs get mad overwhelmed by how quickly vet players speed through things.

BUT i do understand not being able to play with friends right off the bat... I think that is one reason my friend didn't like the game... she was playing all by herself when she is use to playing side by side with me. I usually joke and make even boring things fun.

Everyone starting in the same city would probably cause lag beyond lag lol. Like the others said, you can both choose the same class then change classes after lvl 15. Choosing different classes have their advantages too such as cross class abilities.

Of course they expect family and friends to play together. but that doesn't mean they have to cater to just that single group. The first 15 levels of the game, are basically the learning experience. the quests are simple and easy, and there are no dungeons(until you finish a certain lvl 15 quest at least).

To be fair, if your son is new to MMOs, then you should really encourage him to NOT play as a tank first. Until he can get a decent grasp on how parties work, he should just be doing DPS. After a bit, he can go for tank. You can learn all classes on a single character, so its not like he'll never be able to be a tank on that character.

Arcanist can heal and become a healing role with the Scholar job. The Arcanist starts in same area as a tank class. Not only that you can solo pretty well with arcanist as it has carbuncle dps pet almost right away and then at 15 a tanking carbuncle.

But it is a DPS class till it becomes scholar which is the healing class. In duty finder

Hmm... I'm going to agree with Chiramu. Both of you should start as Conjurer, and then he can switch to Gladiator after getting Conjurer to 15. He'll pick up Cure and Raise, which ought to save both of you a lot of headache down the road, and be set for Paladin's secondary requirement. Getting Gladiator caught up shouldn't take too long, but I recommend leveling alongside him back to fifteen with a fresh class yourself. For White Mage, you'll also need Gladiator if I'm remembering correctly, but two Gladiators will make things take longer. Arcanist or Thaumaturge sound as if they would be suitable choices.

...WAIT! I just checked gamerescape.com, and it says, unlike in V1, that White Mage's secondary requirement is to have Arcanist at level 15, not Gladiator. You should definitely go with Arcanist. And as a bonus, Arcanist can split off into the healing role if you acquire the Scholar job. And the secondary requirement for that is Conjurer at 15, so you could either continue on with Arcanist or go back to Conjurer, and pick up the respective healing job at 30.

By the way... I wish my old man played games with me! Hahahaha! You sound like a pretty cool dad.
