targeting advice for pally tank on ps3

Ok so im level 34 running a pally. I havent had any complaints with losing hate and have been able to hold aggro in all dungeons thus far. (sometimes a little too well when mobs 6 plus tend to overwhelm me and the healer cant keep up. But that only happened in haukke manor once)

There are times when i have trouble targeting enemies that break off and start attacking my healer, because of the wierd targeting on the ps3 i panic... ashamed to say. Ive heard of tab targeting. I use a keyboard in conjunction with the ps3 pad.

    So my questions are
    1. Any advice on how to further customize the targeting? Cuz L2 + R1/L1 doesnt always work for some reason.

    2. It would be a godsend if my targeting didnt pick up those damn carby/egis... but for some reason even though i have my setting click filters set up to not target them. I get trolled amyway. ( Shield bash a carby? Id love too... but its an "invalid target\\' -_-)

I'd love to read what others are doing about this, the targeting for me is the most difficult part of tanking right now considering how easy it is to hit R3 or L3 screwing up the entire view. So far, i have just been practicing with d-pad and it's slowly becoming less painful, however even with me synced in Manor I can't help but notice how hard it is getting aggro back sometimes.

I am having a problem as well but you can hit left or right on the d pad and if you have engaged them before they will be on the list of targets in the lower left side of the screen.

whatever you currently have targeted will be slightly highlighted (this needs to be improved) but target cycle around until the one you want is highlighted and your back in business

    Hey guys!

More of a healer myself but its a similar issue. The best way that I can think of to resolve it is within the targeting filter settings. You can set it so that L1 + Square, Circle, Triangle, and Cross will filter different targets when you press Left or Right on the D-Pad. This is my set up:

    L1 + Square = All Targets
    L1 + Triangle = Friends (Party Members)
L1 + Circle = Enemies (No Carby Yay!)
    L1 + X = NPC / Objects

Hope this helps! Any questions let me know!

If you hold down R2 and tap L1 it will cycle through mobs.

    What's your goal?

When on my CNJ I have 4 slots on one side of my hotbar with a heal macro for each party member.
I generally have the 'combo' hotbar system going when tanking, so if I just tap R2/L2 it lights it up as if I'm holding down the trigger the whole time but if I hold down R2/L2 for longer it only lights up for the single use.

When you have the whole "side" of a hotbar lit, you can cycle mobs by pressing L2/R2. As a healer, I have everything filtered except for enemies. I use F1-F4 if I want to sit on part member and use <tt> on any particular mob through them, or I have my 4 slots for the heals. If I want to target mobs separately R1/L1 does the trick quickly to only enemies.

As a tank, it's even easier. You don't usually need to target any party members as your job is to hold hate.

If for some reason you need to target party members, remember you can use your up/down directional pad keys to cycle through party members regardless of filters.

I'm still not used to using the filters and other target methods. From early on in Beta, I made a macro /tenemy which targets the closest enemy. If I want to target a certain enemy, I have to run close to it and hit the macro. Not very efficient, but I kinda got used to doing it in Beta and can't get away from it lol. The gamepad has too many functions for me, but hopefully I'll get used to it soon.

you may need to change your targeting set. Make sure that you're using the 'battle' targeting set and that it's properly set for when your weapon is drawn. Also, as someone said earlier, if you find yourself falling into different situations use the L+circle/triangle/square etc. sets. It took me a while to even start to get the hang of it. Sometimes my targeting still get's FUBAR'ed, but I think it's just a practice thing and making sure it fits to your overall style and needs.
