So short story is, getting a better GPU will not help you as much as you think with FFXIV. You need good CPU and GPU.

    Operating System: Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit (6.1, Build 7601) Service Pack 1 (7601.win7sp1_gdr.130318-1533)
    Processor: Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-4770K CPU @ 3.50GHz (8 CPUs), ~3.5GHz
Card name: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 770
    Memory: 16384MB RAM

Those above specs should have no trouble whatsoever to run the game but like most others it drops from 200+ to 35 - 40 in certain areas and i don't have it on the highest settings by any means and play 1920x1080.

Of course i can't actually log into the game most of the time...

Also this could be mess of issues since op has gtx 670 so he/she shouldn't have this issue; i would update driver sets on your card first to see it lastest drivers would help.

Also cpu intensive yes; but my faildozer fx-6100 at 4.0 ghz is running fine lowest dip was 35 fps... this persons setup blows my cpu out water easily our gpu's should be within same range X_X

All in all his setup should be performing a bit better than described :/

Nice, mine is a 2012, the GPS system is virtually useless without onstar service.

Depending on your system, overclocking is a good means to get some extra performance. Just make sure your hardware can handle it. I've upgraded all my CPUs before they've been damaged. Shoot, my i7 930 that had a 45% Overclock is now entering it's ~5th year of service and running strong.
How are you getting 20k scores? I've got 2 7950's same as you, both overclocked to 1100/1500 and an i5-3570K at 4.4GHz and I get only 15k+

All in all, even not at max I drop from 60 in some areas for no real reason. 13.8 Beta 2 drivers, everything is updated all the time. Temps are more than fine.

Just like the post above this one says, the "K" series is specifically for overclocking. A small overclock is simple, safe and easy. Depending on your CPU cooler and case airflow you can very easily get it up to 4.2-4.5 Ghz.

    I have three systems:
Desktop - FX6100 @ 4.5ghz, AMD 6870 stock, 16gb RAM. This has consistent FPS in any setting
Laptop - Haswell i7m, nVidia 750m SLI, 12gb RAM. This gets consistent FPS.

What I mean by consistent, is that if an area has low FPS, it sticks around 30. In the field, sticks around 50-60 at the top settings I could get consistency.

Then there's my other laptop - Ivy Bridge i7m, nVidia 680m, 12gb RAM. Before I reformatted it in phases 1-4, EA and launch, got consistent fps. Reformatted and now I have this problem. No matter where I am or what's happening, fps always dips in half. I could be getting 90 in the field, drops to 45. 55-60 in town, drops to 25-30. Always half.

I tried different drivers, 314, the newest official and newest beta drivers, and nothing seems to remedy this. I'm going to reformat and reinstall the game again tomorrow to see if I can kick this because dropping in half every couple minutes is annoying.

For reference, all my systems I use the Chocobo porter rides to monitor and tweak performance until I have as many options on as possible to stay above 60fps consistently. My two machines that aren't problematic don't have any kind of fps problems and even get a solid 40-50 in the aetheryte plazas.

That's weird I have a similar setup as you and things are running fine except for occasional light flickers. z77 3770k 4.5ghz gtx680sc 16gb ram

Just putting this out there. If you haven't tried already, turn off graphics switching if you set that up. Check your nvidia settings to make everything application controlled. And take a look at what proccess are running in the background when your playing the game. Other than that sorry =(

I'm just gonna say that even when you have super power GPU, it's not use if your CPU can't match your GPU

You need your processor to feed the data to GPU.
Without the CPU that capable to feed data to your GPU at it's ability, then the GPU just gonna have to settle down to your CPU thus your low FPS

That say, that some game that you mention are High GPU, Low CPU type of game
But some game like FFXIV are the type that High CPU, low GPU type of game

so unless you upgrade your CPU to match your GPU, i don't think you gonna see any improvement

--Other people offering you suggestion for the parts to change, i'm offering explanation as to why it works like that

With my specs, I can't even run the game on High (Desktop) with a stable 60 frames. It's very unstable in cities which is somewhat expected, but even outside the city questing I get this same problem. I use Unigine to benchmark my GPU considering the Extreme HD feature on it pushes your GPU to its limits. Having FPS between 35-40 means you can generally run any modern game at 60+ FPS.

    Unigine Extreme HD Benchmark:

    FPS:
    40.5
    Score:
    1695
    Min FPS:
    22.0
    Max FPS:
    76.6

My computer can run other games perfectly fine such as Saints Row 3 and Skyrim on Ultra. I understand MMOs can not necessarily be compared with non-MMO games in terms of performance, but this game is decently optimized from what I've been told.

I have the latest beta drivers for my GPU and I have even freshly installed Windows 7 trying to find some sort of problem that I could fix.

My temperatures are fine when running as well. My CPU stays at about 40C and my GPU runs at about 50C.

I got FX8350+HD7970 and I can play the game on average 55fps outside the town and in town with a lot of people I get 35fps maxed out settings (mind you my monitor is 60hz so I frame locked the game at 60fps so that I don't get any taring effect with too high fps and I am playing at 1080p resolution)

I was even able to use Fraps to record a little video on town but at the time of the video there wasn't much people running around the city but I set up my fraps locked on 30fps and it never dipped below 30fps while recording fraps with the game maxed out.

my CPU is OC'd at 4.4Ghz at 1.35v GPU at stock clocks 925/1375

here's that video I recorded, quality isn't as sharp as the original copy since this one that I uploaded is a compressed version (original file got 28Gb while this compressed version is at 298mb LOL!) anyways if you can make up the counter on the top left you will see that it's pretty consinstent at 30fps.
