Yoshida has said that they will be looking into fixing the queue system as well as an AFK auto-boot system after they get server fixes in, so hopefully these things will get dealt with quickly once the new servers are up.
As for the free server transfers, I agree and actually started up a petition thread about it earlier today.

Let's work on solving some of these major issues, Square! C'mon! Let's see some progress!
I'd also like to see the server population... and maybe have a little graph of the past week's data accessible, so it's not "surprise! you picked a server all the EU people secretly hang out on! Gl ever playing those hours"

The server status should be more forthcoming to say the least.

It's an industry standard feature.

Even the most expensive clock still shows sixty seconds.

this would be very useful indeed. I've seen low budget MMO's with this feature, and by low budget, I mean ones that you can download and play for free with cash shops to support them, such as Maple Story, any of them on Perfect World, and Aria games, just to name a few. Several of the games from these places have the server populations listed.

I would have no problem rerolling on a new server if I knew I wouldn't have to deal with log in queues.
