    SE Solution and Probable Result:
    Step 1: Add servers.
Step 2: More AFKs join servers and sit AFK for all of eternity.
Step 3: Thousands of people are still unable to join the "new" servers.

    Solution and Probable Result:
Step 1: Add AFK kick after 30 minutes.
    Step 2: Add more servers.
Step 3: Thousands of people can enjoy your game because they can actually log in to the "new" and old servers.
ok this is why a AFK kick is not the best answer.. IF a realm/server holds 5000 people playing at one time.. But you have 15,000 people trying to get on you have 10,000 more people then what the server/world cans support. So now you have 10,000 people who cant get in and trying to log in all the tiem wich puts stress on the servers.. IF on the server 3,000 are afk and they get kicked .. you still have 7,000 people who are still trying to get in.. So we will still have full servers and the same problems we are having.. Yes some more people will get to play but it wont fix the problem anywere as well as people think it will. So By increase the servers ability to host more people then more people then get in.. then there would be less need for people to afk everyday. As I stated before world of warcraft has some realms/servers set up to host up to 20k people...

But by also increasing the servers cap on a server instead of just adding a bunch of extra server/realms, it will help game play better by having more people to play with so more access to raids and dungens.. Also help build a more stable auction house economy. Then people wont have to worry about having the servers that are like ghost towns because people quite and cant really do anything on a server cause theres really nobody to play with.. So with just increasing server cap when u do have people leave after 6 or 12 months then there will still be a lot of people still on it after to play with.

Adding new worlds will not solve the problem because they are only allowing a 5,000 cap playing players per worlds at a time when some worlds may have 20,000 registered players. I think the best solution would be that worlds are mirrored somehow so that one world is actually made up of 4 servers in some sort of networked community. so instead of adding new worlds, they would actually just add servers to the existing worlds to remedy the existing cap. They would also need to do the same thing for the lobby server so that it is made up of multiple servers. They would need for the NA/EU servers about 100 servers at the datacenter to solve this problem. Wonder what the number of servers actually is at the datacenter now.

No. At this point, my faith in SE's ability to get the problems fixed is not suitably high. Perhaps by the time the realm is reborn-reborn-reborned again...then maybe.

Isn't the new hardware also increasing server capacity? So they are not only adding worlds but upgrading the current ones.

FFXI used far less bandwidth. It was also designed to accommodate players using 56k dial-up connections (because those were still a thing back then). Much less data throughput per player = more players capable of existing at once.

The problem with this is that you're only adding capacity onto a funnel that doesn't have a hole at the bottom. It'll only help for so long before things start to overflow again.

It's funny, coming from WoW which is what, nine years old - this is all a little depressing. Blizzard (now Activision in all but name) is one of the biggest money-grubbing companies there is, and yet they still have the technology to support many tens of thousands of people on one realm, while FFXIV - a brand new game, really - can only support 5k, and lacks many features that are standard in any online game these days.

    What's the issue?

Square had all the figures from pre-orders, they had all the figures from digital sales, they had all the figures from how many boxes shipped - yet they didn't expect this many people? How can you expect us to believe that? Something very wrong went on in Square's corporate side, and it doesn't bode well.

WoW is an incredibly old game that has far less bandwidth requirements per character, and has had those 9 years to fine-tune their hardware. This is to be expected.

FFXIV, on the other hand...they grossly underestimated how many people would actually be interested after how poorly-recieved 1.0 was. Once they've had a couple hundred scheduled server maintenances like WoW has, I'm sure things'll run a lot more smoothly.
