Really? 200? At least? Did you actually go through and count them, and realize that 200 people is a larger number than what most people can generalize like that? Did you sit there and watch them for 5+ minutes, making sure that they were really afk and not watching some cutscene, or messing with their inventory, or sitting around typing in free company chat/linkshell chat?

People are so quick to assume an idea is dumb or delusional. The truth of the matter is, there are a lot of other software developers out there that have already solved problems worse than this faster than this. Read into how blizzard handled the Diablo 3 launch perhaps. Sony on Planetside 2, or hell even planetside 1. I hope I don't have to cite every mmo launched in the last 10 years. Frankly, Square was well aware of the number of copies of the game they sold, and had ample opportunity to prepare for this level of traffic.

Also, software and hardware are two completely different things. The fact that you tried to say that software developers have solved problems with hardware limitations, that are far worse than the hardware limitations of this launch, is...astounding.

Diablo 3 isn't an MMO. The architecture behind D3 and the number of servers used, is COMPLETELY DIFFERENT than FFXIV, WoW, or any other ACTUAL MMO.

Yes, Square was well aware of the number of copies of the game they sold. But maybe they didn't count on the number of 1.0 players coming back and tipping the balance over what their servers could handle? Regardless of what the reason was that they were caught with their pants down, they were pathetically unprepared for the launch.

    Gotta love statistical assumptions.

AFKers have nothing to do as to why you cant log in to the game. It is their crappy servers.

AFKers are just protecting themselves because most of them have work and the only time they can play is during peak times and we all know it is impossible to log in during peak hours.

Now call them greedy, but before doing that, take a look at yourself. You cry and cry to se to boot afkers in order to play. You are greedy as well. Sacrificing the afkers for the sake of you being able to log in. Afkers are just doing the same only difference is while you are trying to pull them down, they are trying to hold on top

You would be astounded to know how much compensation software does for hardware actually. Consider google writes and compiles its code on machines with defective memory, deliberately. Here is a scenario for you: You are square, and you have this server problem. Make 2 phone calls, first call a bank, say you are square, you have 200,000 concurrent users, and you are billing them per month. Give them your business plan, and ask for a bit of money. Phone call 2, call intel, or whoever you want for a hardware solution, and get a truckload of servers delivered. As long as your software developers can adapt the login structure to accomodate your new servers, problem solved. Oh, and on the topic of software developers, they teach queues and stacks in highschool, which the current login server desperately needs. The simple lack of basic good programming practice is why I am so quick to mention software. I can see the software, I can only estimate the hardware.

you forget one important thing. Yes it's a monday but in the US (and probably Canada), it is LABOR DAY meaning it's a holiday so only the minimum people are at the data center and NA support is closed for the day. I would also say crash the servers and reboot with a quene system in effect. in fact, they probably will do this on Wednesday to get everyone off.
