The server status sites I've been to say that they are up, but I haven't seen them in the list.

This is solely due to the lobby server being over loaded with all the request. I don't know who thought it would be a good idea to feed 40 servers through the same matching/logging server, but at least there is a light at the end of the tunnel.
Quickly becoming the worst launch in history of mmorpgs
I've played a ton of MMOs over a 15 year period and, even though my memory seems to get away once in a while, I cannot remember one that was THIS badly managed in regards to being able to log in. That's not to say that they didn't have login issues, sure they pretty much all did, but after over a week since launch? Nothing comes to mind.
I'm pretty understanding and patient when it comes to things breaking (coming from an IT point of view) but this...this makes me a sad panda something fierce.
I was going to make a new thread asking how the release compared to other released, but basically you just answered my question, would be interested to know how XI was on release,I've played a ton of MMOs over a 15 year period and, even though my memory seems to get away once in a while, I cannot remember one that was THIS badly managed in regards to being able to log in. WoW, game was down for over a week right after launch. and was spotty had pretty much the same login issues, and ques that would take well over an hour...I've played a ton of MMOs over a 15 year period and, even though my memory seems to get away once in a while, I cannot remember one that was THIS badly managed in regards to being able to log in. from Guild Wars 2's launch
"Ensuring the best possible play experience for our fans is our highest priority. We’ve said before that we would be willing to temporarily disable first-party digital sales if we felt our high player concurrency may compromise player experiences. We have now reached that point."
Boy that sounds familiar...hell, a cursoury google search of "Guild Wars 2 launch Issues" turn up that anyone saying it was totally smooth is lieing through their teeth.
I've yet to play an MMO that on launch WEEK is up more often than it's in maintenance
when it released in Japan it was basically identical (which is to say , A Disaster) with the added bonus of having PlayOnline also being congested to hell and back... which basically makes these login issues seem paltry in comparison, there is actually a List of the various bugs, fixes and updates that were done to the game before it released in the US but I'm having trouble finding it

I think you need some perspective about bad launches:

I'm saying this as yeah, the servers do go offline ( a lot less since open beta) but when you get on there are zero issues. The game is a charm, no glitches, no sync issues, no lag - these are my experiences but I haven't heard of others having constant issues (other than logging in), once in, boom it is a fantastic and wonderful game.
I hope there are soon new servers
All JP servers are locked for new characters
Hey! Look on the brightside. When you finally get to log in, you'll have a butt load of rested exp. =P Hope you logged out in a sanctuary!
