In response to the character models comment;
The rendering engine used for 2.0 is completely different from 1.0.
The lighting/shadows and shaders used in 1.0 created a better illusion that the models were more detailed but at a VERY high performance cost.
2.0 now uses defered rendering which allows for faster and cheaper lighting and shadow casting. Which leaves more 'power' to add in more details elsewhere simply put.
The textures have changed significantly from 1.0 in the fact that the diffuse (the actual texture) bump maps (what creates the illusion that the mod has depth detail) and specular maps (shiny) had parts of the models with less details than the other, to reduce the texture memory impact.
The resolution for these has been lowered offering less detail whilst freeing up memory on the GPU which has been essential in getting 2.0 to work on the PS3 and mid range PCs.
Yoshida already announce a DX11 client update which will improve the lighting and shadow casting, shaders and along with that a high resolution texture pack.
It won't be exactly the same as 1.0, but sadly the systems used to modify/edit/render FFXIV 1.0 were just far too taxing for your average consumer.
-------------------
FFXIV 1.0 used a fantastic system of a parametric deformer for gear. Where they would have one gear model which would decimate and collapse on itself depending on what piece if gear was under it. The way this system works seems to have changed in 2.0, and or doesn't exist anymore, probably to save the game from caching and or loading in too many different charachter/gearmodels. The sizing in. 1.0 was great for this reason but at the inevitable cost of performance.

Yoshida already answered this, please check the top post on the lodestone and the forum Dev tracker.
They have provided at least 30 updates on the issue so far and their progress with it, provoking further response isn't needed.
However incase you missed out;
- Starting next week new servers for worlds and instances content will go live, with an all worlds maintenance on Wednesday JPN time. This /should/ alleviate the stress from the servers and ease or eliminate the log in restrictions you're facing. At the moment FFXIV is at its playable capacity for connections, to ensure that the people who ARE connected remain online and experience a smooth experience the restrictions will stay until the above mentioned has completed.
