Curious on thoughts about the job system

Now, I didn't play much of beta. I'll put that up front. I was a long time FFXI player and moved on for a bit and tried this in 1.0 and just lost interest badly. I'm back with release and have played pretty avidly since.

One thing I was disappointed on was when I unlocked dragoon, it just didn't feel like I unlocked a job. Now I know I'm comparing FFXI too much here, and to be fair I love that game still. But when you really just unlock a class "mask" based on the crystal you hold, does that really feel like you are your new job? I'm only 32 so I'm sure things are different at 50, but I kinda liked the idea of unlocking a job and then leveling it with it's own unique abilities and feel. Does anyone else feel this way?

This isn't a flame thread just wondering if people feel the same or I'm just being too nostalgic in hopes of a FFXI-2 lol.

The first 30 levels is just a tutorial then the next 20 levels is a tutorial to learn the new abilities and be tested through dungeon to prepare you for the level 50 dungeons. That's why the dungeon difficulty curve takes such a huge swing at level 30 because they are trying to make you get used to harder difficulty of dungeons because you think these ones are bad imagine when you have a fully party it will be even more complex.

You aren't alone. The advanced jobs (Dragoon, Paladin, etc) don't feel like new jobs at all. I just feel like I'm putting on a magic hat and some stuff gets shuffled around. I don't feel any investment towards that new class, or feel like much as changed. If it was a job that started at level 1, had it's own leveling arc, and more unique skills granted to it I'd likely feel more attached in the long run. I feel the same way about "sub-job" skills. The choices feel rather anemic, unfortunately.

I'm still enjoying the game, and I'm enjoying the combat, but it feels like it's missing a few gears that should be spinning.

Yeah this is more or less what I'm saying. I don't, say for instance, feel like a dragoon. I'm just a lancer with jump. I like the game and all too, so it's not an anti-SE approach I mean by it. I just don't feel the investment in actually being that class. A '99 honda with a new paint job, is a still a '99 honda.

I agree with this. I think it will be better once each class has multiple jobs (like ACN -> SMN, SCH). The way the others are now is weird to me. I also agree with what someone said about maybe starting your Jobs at level 1. Alternately, back in 1.0 I remember thinking that classes should just stop at lvl 30, and you would only level jobs higher than that.

Yeah I really wished they would have stuck to the previous system. It's the only real major issue I have with the game right now.
