Be able to fight as a miner

who thinks miner is the best DoL?

lol but really all DoL's should be able to fight, not well but if they are going to be out in the elements: why make them useless at fighting?

obviously they wouldn't learn any abilities to fight from their trade, but with the ability to use War and Magic abilities, they could use their fighting skills previously learned to combat the elements. i'm carrying a pickaxe and marmots are mocking me as I pass.

We need some way to defend ourselves against aggro mobs that attack us during gathering. Running away from the node is not an acceptable solution.

Am I the only one who finds it incredibly annoying that I can't use my pickaxe on coblyns? They look like walking (well, scurrying) mining points to me. I have always thought that DOL should be really good at fighting certain types of mobs, and subpar at the rest. Like miners for the Rockkin and botanists should be great at fighting plantkin. I am not sure what a fisher could do, but i'm sure there are aquakin that they could take a swing at. It would also be a way for them to get some rare items in the game for us to gather. NM or HNM versions of mobs could be harvested from, and harvesting from them would do damage and debuff them. Just my two gils on the subject.

When I played Vanguard, they had this.

Group harvesting first off. This then was applied to group harvesting of NM corpse for items.
This could be applied, atleast for a single DoL player, as an ability to contribute to NM hunts.

This would also be a motivation for gear upgrades, if NM harvesting required exceptional stats, or the results were ultra-rare, so every single stitch of mats is invaluable.

As an active LS member who will have all DoL @ 50, my value to the NM hunt would be high, vs now, just camping spawns.

For now I just switch clesses.

It would be nice to simply swing a pickaxe against some irritating aggro mobs well below my level. I can't imagine what kind of balance issues would be created by added significant damage to Miner. I suppose if noSP is rewarded for killing mobs then it would work. Still, you would have to write damage into DoL tools. Really jsut switching classes works in the rare instance you get an aggro while mining.

They already adjusted mob ranges around mining points. I haven't gotten an aggro while actively mining since.

A goobue walked directly past me, you seem to be somewhat invisible while mining now.

    dev1003 dev1020 dev1031 dev1034 Miners in party play

I agree with Adalast, mining coblyns would be a great way for miners to participate in party play. Likewise botanists and fishers could similarly gather/debuff other beasts/wavekin. I have added what I believe are the most relevant tags to this post to get developer attention.

I've NEVER thought of that but these are fantastic ideas.

Now this get's my stone-sense tingling! For someone who has miner as their main class like I do, some more variety would be brilliant. Putting darling Neneko aside, so far it's either "go mine 3 of this rare stuff", "go mine these three nodes" or "run around mining the next closest point on your radar if you want to grind" and that's it.

I also got aggro'd by a Notorious Monster spawn while mining the other day. Made me cry a little inside - I couldn't finish the leve.

Better avoidance or deterrance mechanisms would help a lot. We don't have to shoot ink or lose a tail, but over the years gathering jobs should have perfected advanced mob avoidance countermeasures a little better than the freaking eluder abilities.

Early, early on in the development process they talked about how miners or maybe blacksmiths would have treasure hunter abilities that battles would want, but that this would understandably make the battle more difficult if played with miners. Also, they talked about alchemists pouring liquids on metal enemies for damage. These comments showed up in official statements by the team. They've thought hard about it and almost did it, but they decided not to. Might be for the best, as that's really hard to balance and design well.

I think a set of 3 nms that you can gather from: A Coblyn, a Malboro, and a Flan, would be hilarious and awesome. Bring a gatherer to NM day. Maybe the goal wouldn't be to kill it, but to stay alive and let your gatherers have at it until it escapes. Then it's a matter of how many healers and tanks can you afford to scrap to let more gatherers whack the NM.

Notorious mining nodes could also be a great idea that destroy a single gatherer in terms of remainder and hits, but allows a party of them to work together to get NM-quality drops.
