One thing I don't care who you know or what you do, being an IT manager and getting the hardware, then testing are entirely different.
SE should have used pre-orders and 1.0 accounts as a baseline period.
HOWEVER! I also know for a fact it's more than just setting up new servers a) it can take a week to get the hardware, then getting everything setup in an 8 hour work day, then installing the software, networking the server to the other servers and testing it for stability does take quite a bit of time
the main problem with all of this is: LACK OF COMMUNICATION
We get a response from SE 8-36 hours after the problem occurred Some factors aren't adding up: no community representative to talk to us and deliver news faster from the dev's and minimal responses from the dev's

"this game has a HUGE over response that was NEVER anticpated by anyone in the game industry"

did make me laugh. 1) they released it version 1 (same response as this) and failed. 2) they've had beta tests which showed just how many people were interested in the game.

if this was their first time at an MMORPG, i'd agree with your points. It's not. I don't. The communication has been pitiful go on say it

"they are too busy fixi".. stop.. right there. stop. They have teams. One of the teams is community, they barely show their faces except to say "we apologise for any convenience" usually 2 days after it's happened. Just take a look at the most important parts of the client. Then the bits below it. All of them "sorry for the inconvenience" it's a repeat, repeat. repeat. The more times they say it, the more times i shake my head. It's like they have no social graces or ability to speak to a gaming community. In short, their excuses stink to high heavens.

It's amusing but seeing previous MMORPG releases, if it continues into the 2nd week of the 30 days free. How many will renew the sub?

free to play 6 months, if they don't get their skates on now. I don't want that to happen, you don't want that to happen. As a company they should have been up to date with how other launches have gone, have the info from their previous launch and the beta info. And didn't do anything about it. The game was fine but no one thought "how about getting INTO the game, is that okay".

It's like they didn't even engage their brains, and now they're hiding away from the forums with apologises. Just come on, once in a while and say "look we have no update yet but we're trying everything" but NO, just silence.

The whole situation is somewhat sad I think. I mean the game itself is pretty nice to play and even fun at some times. A bit simple and straight, but that does not have to be something bad.

However, SE already messed up this game once, thus the second attempt should be flawless, else you lose a lot of trust and, well people. Even now players tell others who might be interested to back away from the game, what is a lost sale. And when even the press starts writing about it, it usually leads to even less new costumers.

Real pitty, the game had quite a lot of potential. Maybe it still has, but it will need more than some teary excuse from some asian man to manage that.

The funny thing is, it's not the japanese part of the team that fucked up. They had incorrect sales and pre order figures from the NA side of SE. They already said as much in one of the post.

Never the less a fuck up is a fuck up. No matter which side of the pacific is on.

Lets take a look at history..

    http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/05...s-of-all-time/

So... we just found out everybody complaining that this is the worste release of an MMO or that this isnt normal are retards. WoW the best selling MMO of all time had the same issues. not enough servers. a lot of players couldnt log in because of this. and they had FAR more bugs. You people need to get over yourself and learn what to expect at launch. If you expect perfection then don't play MMOs until they have been out at least 6 months. I have played many MMOs at launch and this one honestly is one of the most stable. They just need to fix that I DC alot when I try to teleport, and they need better servers. this will all be fixed soon enough.

So you are going to give players a free week or are considering it, for me do not even bother I will just take a relic weapon voucher at this point or how about 1k tomestones or something that has a guaranteed effect for me in game, not how about another week and maybe things will work after Wednesdays maintenance. Bottom line it really is unacceptable, they say they have a fix but it will not be until Wednesday(really why not now, nothing can really get any worse).

Right. And WoW launched in 2005. Eight years ago. You could also make the excuse that, as you said yourself, as a best-selling game they were a bit overwhelmed as this kind of scale was indeed unprecedented.

However, it's 2013 now. MMOs are a mature market now.

It's hilarious, by the way, that your very own link lists FFXIV...

50 servers 5000 people per server total 250000 connections across all Realms

    25 na/eu servers 125000 maximum concruant connections

25 jap servers 125000 maximum concruant connections

you figured this game had to have preorders in the few million... there looking at having to add another 50 servers 25 per data center to even have remotely half of there preorders.. I didn't even factor ps3 into it. that's if they want to sustain 500 thousand users... We wont even get into if this game was to get as large as wow was at over 10 million users... Yes i know do to diffrent time zones not everyone will be on at once.. but your still looking at 250k-500k average daily load of users.

I would say yes they completely misunderstood how many servers they actually needed. Just hope they step it up and get it squared away before they really start to loose there base users and its going to wind up a failure like 1.0 was not because 2.0 is a bad game because people just get so tired of trying to log in they just move on.

Just as a note peak time hours can easily range from 500-1.2 million users at any given time.

Thank you all for sharing. /bow

Thanks for all the interesting replies and I am very glad to hear everyone's sharing and opinions and I will happily keep this thread open as long as people are civil and do not engage in malicious attacks on anyone especially our hosts, Square Enix. We are after all guests, paying guests yes, like at any hotel or restaurant or MMO but we are obliged by common courtesy and good manners to be polite to each other and whatever your views, i urge you all to respect each other and not attack each other for having differences of opinion. I can very much appreciate the sadness many feel at not being able to enter the game during early access, or to get on after repeated attempts. I too have had some of that, and i am very very long experienced at the world of games and MMOS having played the very first ones and been in more beta tests and support levels than i can ever remember back to the days of Pong. That being said, and I am happy to see many others who have similar long histories of experience, i tried to share some basic facts of this situation and to help us vent and release our feelings so that we don't get more unhappy over something that is indeed a very happy overall picture.

Let me try to once again make some simple points:

    First

    1. Square Enix and the team of development, who are pictured here...

under the leadership of a remarkable and rather unique leader, Yoshi San, have created an amazing game. It is one of the most beautiful game worlds I have ever imagined I would see, and I have seen most of them, and worked on making them myself. That alone is a fantastic achievement. Then they took a title from a complicated but ingenious series and gave it new life, put in new features and thought long and hard about what could help improve MMOs for us all. In many ways MMOs have reached a turning point, they are being created in large numbers and most of them are cut from the same cloth, very similar and quite limited in quite a few says.....long grind fests with spotty story and often rather unpleasant community problems that develop over time. The fun and the challenge and the gifts of games that can come to us are a relief from our lives, an adventure, the fun of challenges and battles and exploring, and sharing are many..and can be even more.

Here they have spent the time and effort and investment to reach for the stars and I feel have in many ways reached those stars with a remarkable and wonderful new game.

    Second,

running an MMO is a classic problem in Physics, and Human Community combines, two imponderable and mysterious realms. It is never simple to create a vast world that can bear the actions of millions of events both player generated and system ie world created that is persistent, ie that everyone can see all of the changes that happen all the time each on their own screen. I was involved in the very first attempts many ears ago and our technology of that time was unable to deliver what was needed. Now we have vastly better systems and the chance to share and to enjoy together, in huge numbers the same world and story.

The demands of huge numbers of people creates a cascade of events that changes momentarily at the servers and across the system. The flood of entry is an immense impact on the entire set up, and creates flows and gated effects that are very complex and take highly skilled management and at times crisis calls such as closing access and limiting aspects of play like limiting character creation.

Modern style of play and modern players are different from what we had in the early days. Now people want and expect instant service and to have whatever they want NOW or sooner. To wait for a day or a week is almost impossible for some to imagine when the limitations of a system are made clear by a huge overwhelming demand that was just not possible to predict.

It is clear that this game and the story which combines adventure, combat, story, crafting, all set in a beautiful world that is very inviting and intriguing to people of all ages and backgrounds was right on the target of what was needed and hoped for. So we now have ...

    Third..

What do do and how does it impact us? Well, they moved immediately to bring in new resources. It takes time to create and set up a server with stability and all of the resources and connections to the system that are needed for responsible administration. Skilled administrators are needed, staff integration and expansion are required, someone has to watch the soup. And constant review has to be made about the actual game itself and whether the game code must be changed or improved ON the job to to speak like repairing a car while ti is speeding down the highway or a train on the tracks at full speed. Not an easy thing to do, any of this. All must be decided upon and acted upon while maintainting the system all the while. The best analogy is hydraulics and managing the flow of water over a huge dam running turbines at full speed, you must constantly monitor the water behind the dam, all of us, new flow into the reservoir, for the speed of word of mouth and entry of new potential players is a constant potential factor and then making sure the dam does not crack and that all works...it is beyond belief how complex this all is.

It is what makes this possible. Yes we all would have hoped for smooth and easy no problem access. But none of us as i have said many times now, knew this would be a tidal wave .... beyond any former figures. These are the facts.

    Fourth, what do we do?

We can share and help each other wait and bear the wait. We can ask for more focus and attention from Square Enix, Support staff and from distributors. We can leave and ask for refunds. We can...vent, or commiserate and sympathize and try to help each other understand. It is similar to what people do at any big event, challenge or miracle. Some will accept and enjoy what they can and be amazed, some will do other things.

You are all welcome as am I to choose, and I choose to help us understand and wait and be glad this wonderful game has come to us. You cannot hurt me with words, but i am sorry if you feel upset at anything I or that Square Enix says, no one means to harm anyone and means anyone to be unhappy or wants that. Life has enough challenges and this is in the end all about having fun and enjoying the wonderful adventure that lies ahead.

We can each of us choose each day how we feel about our lives and the things that happen, we are not slaves or prisoners of our lives or of events tho at times we can do nothing ourselves to help to change things. I hope we can all get thru this and enjoy the wonders of Eorzea together and I am very glad and happy that people felt like sharing their feelings here whatever you may feel, and promise to listen carefully to all you may wish to say, but i do hope we can keep nice about it all, and have faith in Square Enix, I do, but again we are all free to make our choices. Thanks again and thanks Yoshi San for taking the time to share with us as much as you have and I hope for our continued success here and for a happy future for us all.

Let us all remember this game was created by people, people with feelings and who tried very very very hard to make something wonderful and to share that with us for our enjoyment. WE are all people too, not just anonymous posters or words on the screen and we all have our hopes, dreams and desires...pains and joys....and I am very very sorry it has been so tough for many of us, myself at times included. No one meant it to happen that way. An apology is indeed a deep sign of regret and taking of responsibility. We can and I hope will be kind to each other and to everyone and help make things better each of us.

That right there, that is your problem, the issue that would reduce server load, and reduce complaints. Instead of a quick "bandaid" fix until they can launch the server upgrades. they just wait and let the problem fester. There is just as much heat on the JP side as well....
