Actually you are also doing a big favor to the planet (limited recourses anyone?) and to your electricity bill if you don't leave your PC on when you arent actually using it. As to hard drives, then I had a similar problem and the actual cause was that it was hot weather (I wasnt even home to notice that) and PC just crashed from overheating and the drives went alongside with that. Had to pay quite some $$ for new ones.
