100% agree with Therils post above. I'd imagine an afk kick will be implemented very soon.
SE forced our hands with the combination of server caps and no AFK timers. The only way for people to play reliably when they want is to stay logged in. Blame SE, not the players. Once they fix their end, we should see and end to this being a problem.
No, you can't blame SE for this - every new MMORPG has launch troubles. EVERY. SINGLE. ONE. They didn't force your hand, you chose to stay in, there's nothing preventing you from hitting "Log Out" or "Exit Game", if anything you're hurting yourself by not getting a proper rested bonus by staying logged in.
You can blame a lot on SE, but I don't see a gun held to anyone's head in-game and out saying they need to stay logged in.
You can blame SE for the following - Not taking into consideration all of the metrics provided from previous betas and preorders, not implementing an AFK kick, server caps. I'm not blaming SE for my want to stay logged in, I'm blaming them for the circumstances that allowed this to happen and made it viable.
Plus, if I'm logged out in a sanctuary, I'm getting my rested XP, whether I'm logged in or out. It's an unfortunate fact that, given the opportunity, people will take advantage of an issue like this. In this case, everyone loses. Either I stay logged in so I can play, or I log out and have no idea when I'll be able to log back in again. This same thing goes for everyone.
SE is the only one to blame. It was in their hands to spend more money for a better server infrastructure. No, you can't blame SE for this - every new MMORPG has launch troubles. EVERY. SINGLE. ONE. I do blame them but i will also blame the the players. Plain and simple it is rude and shows a blatant disregard for others no matter the excuse cause that is all it is. I will continue to log out because it is the right thing to do. The new generation with its total belief in self-entitlement is disgusting period.

I always take 30 minutes more or less to log in and I always log out when I am done, except for weekends I only have 1-2hours to play maximum, but I still prefer to log out and let someone else play, feels more right. Also, if I would leave my PS3 on all day I would likely fry it's hardware at some point
I can't log in today to play. I have learned my lesson. I will stay logged in overnight from now on. It was a hard lesson to learn but I thank Square-Enix for teaching me this valuable lesson.
I log out whenever I'm not playing, except when I know I'm only away for 5-10 minutes.
It's a shame not everybody shares this level of respect for their fellow players.
I am too nice and reasonable of a person. I work hard to get past 1017. I play till I have to go do something in real life, then exit the game to give others a chance to play. I don't care if you are frustrated with logging in, I just feel it is kinda pig headed to deny others a chance to play by staying afk. Because what if the others happened to be you? I think people need to be a bit more courteous than to just go afk for an entire day because they don't want to be frustrated logging in. That's just how I feel about it.
