Nobody's going to log out just to feel like they're letting some stranger play instead of them.

Also, everyone keeps saying they should an auto-kicker. But then you'll just have people going to their inns and running into a wall. Autokicking wouldn't work at all for peak hours, when those afkers are actually playing. Autokicking isn't even close to a good solution. We need better servers and that's it.

I've said it in a diff thread but I'll say it here, too :P

I'm torn actually. Is it selfish to stay logged in because you know you'll have little chance of getting back on when u log out? Yes, possibly. However, I do understand it. Everyone wants to play during their free time period (and alot will stick with the game after the trial ends). And as much as I agree with "Everyone should get the chance to play, so log out!", I also agree with people that stay logged in, and with their reasons for doing so. Guess you can say I'm neutral :3

If I wasn't careful with leaving my PC on for too long I might have been one of those ppl that decides to not log out during the night... But I wouldn't do it often, and not for long, either. I don't want my PC to overheat :P The longest time I've ever generally left my comp on without switching it off is 2 days :P

It's not your fault? Did SE force you to stay logged in? Or are you trying to suggest that you are somehow blameless for making the choice to idle 24/7? Do you really need to be forced to behave like an adult by SE? No one is suggesting that there isn't an issue with the servers here, but people idling 24/7 is only making that issue worse. Stop trying to deflect blame for the choices you made.

    1. No one is going to initiate a 10 minute AFK timer. Most of us want around 30 minutes to an hour.
    2. A good chunk of these que problems are because people are taking up space they're not using. Initiating a timer would help (not totally remove mind you) to alleviate that and bring more balance to who can get in. Because everyone is paying for this game.

Honestly I am rather disgusted with what is in this thread. Here's how I see things. SE Admitted they under-estimated how popular the game was. They gave folks the numbers for how many a server can hold and how many are actively trying to login. The sensible thing to do AS a community, would of been to show respect for others on your server. Unlike games like world of warcraft, your server reputation is on the line in community based games. And showing a complete lack of respect for your fellow players does not reflect well on the ones behaving badly by denying others space on the servers.

Now we've reached a point where there's maybe a small handfull of players actually playing. And the majority of the "players" are sitting idle in every sanctuary 24/7 now. I got on after 15 tries yesterday morning at 5:40 am. Ul'dah was full of afkers. Sitting in every part of the city or standing not moving for hours on end till I had to log out because I am in the process of moving. The little bit of time I do get to myself, I can no longer login. Once I logged out yesterday, there was no getting back on. If I reached the load screen it was trolling me by staying up 5-8 seconds then 1017ing me.

This morning, there's still 0 chance of playing. The afkers have right now won. And quite frankly if I worked at SE, I'd be taking note of each and every afker bragging about griefing their servers at the expense of others. AFKers are not part of the solution, they are now the problem. My anger is not at SE. They are working to address the problems. My anger is at the people taking advantage of the problem to grief others by keeping them offline while they are in bed asleep or at school. And I say school because it is hard to believe a grown adult would be so selfish to afk while at work. A grown adult would be more concerned with the welfare of their computer and their electric bill.

I only read a few pages of this insanely long thread so I may repeat what others have said. The people who don't log off the game are the problem. Yes we all know this. They are the only ones trying to justify their actions by blaming the games systems etc. I read one person state that it doesn't matter because in a few weeks the player base will drop drastically due to people not wanting to pay for the game and I agree. The funny thing is those going by that mindset are only going to ruin the game for themselves. Who wants to play a dead MMO? Look at how swtor started and then GW2. Both games started with large amounts of players and now they are small communities of faithful slowly falling apart. Markets drop, Free Companies will have trouble finding players for end game and the pvp community will be extremely boring(when it arrives).
So run off the other players by stating that it's not your problem and in the end you will have a boring game to play.

An AFK timer does not fix anything. If you have half a brain all you have to do is set a macro to cast something every few minutes. 30 minutes to me is too short, I could deal with 1 hour, but it still would not fix anything. I have done this in numerous games so I do not get AFK kicked from the game, I think this is why they do not do AFK timers, because it is too easy to bypass anyway, why waste the time and effort to implement one.

the sentiment that afkers should log off is nice an all, but for every one one of us, theres someone else macroing their numpad 0 key overnight to get in and ... afk.

This is ridiculous. 80-90% of players would not think to do this or know how until someone like you posts it in a forum. Why make murder illegal when everyone would just try to hide the body and get away with it? Extreme metaphor but you get the point.
