For those that are curious, here's what Wadard (the Dreamer Kikina's assistant) at Ul'dah says when questioned about the eggs:

Fortune alights on the shoulders of those♪
Who gather the eggs that Heaven bestows!♪
Collect one Archon egg and one lightning, earth, and water Archon egg, and I shall give you a pristine egg cap, similar to the one the Dreamer wears herself.
This combination is required for the first step in the summoning ritual. The uncolored egg, representing one of the twelve Archons, is placed at the center of a circle made from the aspected eggs. It is from these that the Archon draws the energy needed to break from the aether and reenter this world.
And what happens after that, you ask? Why, the Archon leads us through the coming cataclysm, and on into a new era. It has been thus since the dawn of time.

When you actually turn in the eggs to get the cap, he says:

Have you brought all of the eggs I asked for?
Why yes, I believe they are all in order. Please wait here until I return with your reward.
A pristine egg cap, just as promised. And with this raiment, you will be recognized as a hero of the Archons. Keep it close, so that when our saviors return to Eorzea, they might know their loyal servants.

Makes me think that something else is going to happen at the update, too. I'm kind of hoping we're not overthinking this, though we probably are. It's going to feel lame if we put all this effort into it, only to realize that the next update just adds more eggs to collect to get a cap, then another one adds more eggs to collect to get a cap. X.x

Has anyone tried to wear down the durability of the Pristine Egg Cap to 0? Maybe it'll crack and reveal a new cap.

I dont think that they would have done that, simply because there are players who are in ther 20's on all classes or higher, and that would completely shut them out of it, because it would take ages to break a cap like that.

now you need to get a regular Archon Egg, an Earth Archon Egg, a Lightning Archon Egg, and then talk to the NPC beside the NPC that gives you an egg every 8 hours to get your prestine cap.

If you just want to buy the eggs to search the Wards. Masons --> Gemstones bottom of list is where the eggs are.

If you want to just buy the helm search lower tailers ward. But then you won't get quest completed.
