Game turns off than on with horrible fps

So my problem seems to be that after playing the game for about an hour or so my graphics card will turn off and back on (exactly like when the display driver stops working) but i never get a thing that pops up that says the display driver stooped working, everything looks the exact same on my desktop, because when the display driver stops working my desktop looks different, so i don't think that's what happened.

But again it looks just like the display driver on my GTX680 has malfunctioned as the whole screen will turn black, than come back up with me still in FFXIV. When it comes back up the game will be running at 5 fps. Where as before this happens I am running the game on max settings with 60+fps.

This problem also happens in the benchmark sometimes to. When I run the benchmark if the benchmark starts up right away it runs perfectly. But sometimes the screen will go black and come back up with the benchmark loading and it won't run good at all.

I am using a EVGA Nvidia GTX680 with driver version 9.18.13.1422.

Are the newer drivers fixed now? the only reason I don't update to them is because I kept hearing that it drastically decreases FFXIV's performance.

    Edit--------

I first thought maybe its something my graphics card did? (maybe like a failsafe?) cause it was overheating. I checked it out and it was running at 59 degrees Celsius which from what I understand is a fairly good temp.

If this is true, (which im thinking it is cause in order to fix the problem all i have to do is exit the game and than start it up again and its fixed). Does anyone know of a driver version that this would not happen with? Cause it gets kinda irritation having to exit FFXIV every hour and log back in. I mean it would be irritation normally with a normal game, but having to do it with a game that has all these server problems and 90k errors, its always nerve racking when i have to exit. Cause who knows if I will be able to get back in.

hmm, the game does seem to freeze for about a second or two before the screen goes black and than comes back. Guess I will just have to update my drivers and hope for the best? and hope the drivers don't diminish my performance to much?

I get a similar problem when I alt-tab. Never has crashed or shut off, but it's like it forces 3D acceleration off on the tab back in.

Turning shadows down on seems to fix the problem in this particular game.. I would try that first. Only game / software that cause's my drivers to crash at all, has 100% stopped since turning shadows down to lowest, everything else on highest settings. Seems to be a problem with the game / engine and not with the drivers themself.

I created a thread on a similar (the same?) topic.
    http://forum.square-enix.com/ffxiv/t...-low-framerate

I get no error messages at all either. In fact, Id even say the game is just thinking I alt-tabbed out of it when I didnt. Thats really what it feels like to me.

Im able to fix it by just alt-tabbing out of it, back to desktop, giving it a second or two, and alt-tabbing back in.

I have a somewhat similar issue. I have an EVGA 680 reference and if the overclock is too high, it crashes and comes back usually at default clocks. Rarely does it get stuck at a minimal clock that causes the low FPS. Another issue that I found was that, occasionally, the game minimizes and goes to the desktop and doesn't return until I pull it back up manually. The clocks never change in this case, but it is still annoying to the max when I am trying to tank things.

ye similar to me on an asus gtx670, but yesterday it was fine, the game had a problem only after u create a character and log in during the intro.

After that I played on max setting all the day.

Today after maintenance and I guess a patch, all gone to shit. On max 1920*1080 after 15-20min the whole sistem starts to lag and after I close the game the desktop is fucked up for the lag and I have to reboot. On normal settings it seems fine.

on beta I had zero problems :/

Today I updated the logitech gaming software, I thought it was it but after unistall it the problem persist. Tried the beta drivers too but it's the same.

Now I'm redownloading the game, most bad I try a fresh os install

I have had the same problem with my gtx670. I don't overclock it, but having a Overclocking tool handy in the background. When my screen goes black i just tab out to MSI afterburn move a setting bar (clock or memory) hit 'apply' button and then 'reset' button. Tab back to the game and the FPS are back to normal...

I sure do hope Nvidia is taking to time to optimize FFXIV:ARR so i wouldnt need to do this.

I had this happen to me on the first day of playing with my brand new "gaming" computer. I downloaded the driver from NVidea and it's been smooth sailing ever since. It's a 660 card I think.
