Questions about questing?

First of all, I apologize in advance, as this question has probably been asked before...

Is it viable to level your primary class doing mostly your main quest line, and FATEs?

I admittedly have little understanding at this point on how the job systems work, but if I do need to "grind out" multiple classes, I'd like to leave as many side quests behind as possible to make that quicker. So far, because of the population density in the low level zones, I've been doing a lot of mob grinding for exp to make up levels, since I can't get to FATEs before they're completed most of the time.

If you want to save the side quests, you can. You'll still be able to get decent leveling in just from the main story line quests and FATEs. Just keep in mind that once you are a higher level (around 15) you will also have levequests and guildheists that give pretty good exp that you can do multiple times a day. Dungeons can also be good exp if you don't mind waiting around looking for a party.

Thanks for the info. I'll continue what I'm doing then. I'm a) in no rush, and b) accustomed to waiting around for dungeon groups

I'm up to 24 so far only doing main quest/hunting log/class quests/fates, seems to be going ok, also I've done the first 3 dungeons 2-3 times each to grab gear so that put me slightly ahead, but by the time I got to toto rak I was right on level again, figure I'll run it a couple more times while I go through the rest of the story to unlock the next dungeon and keep going like that.

Edit: Exp per mob in totorak is about 1/10th of the xp of completing a story quest, and there are a lot of mobs in there, half a level on my first run

Hopefully OP sees this, but there is actually a mechanic in place that makes it so if the combat class you are on isn't your highest, you get a flat +50% XP bonus, so it will help you out when leveling side-classes.

It is helpful to save some of the side quests for your secondary classes, otherwise it take a long time to do the levelling. Anyway enjoy whatever path you take enjoy the story and the fun.

It's feasible at lower levels but I've found post 20 that I've had to do all the subquests that pop up wherever the main story takes me as well as some Fates and dungeons to keep levelling on my main class. Haven't used any leves or guildhests though.

If you continue the main story far enough you'll be able to get a mount. These are very helpful in FATE hopping and can be used in your lower level classes.

Even a low levels I found that I needed to do a few side quests for the gil. I'm just going to try and minimize the amount I do.
