But I'm in the same group as most people here. Amazon apparently cancelled my digital order, even though I've been playing since the early release...so I'm not getting that other registration key in my email. So now I've gotta find a physical copy of the game to get a key, but my character is still on the server, safe and sound; I just have to find a way to get in, right?

Your character will be safe with us until you can get back on. =) Characters are never deleted unless you go in to your account and delete the character.

Yes, they won't delete your character just because your account went inactive. After a long period of inactivity they might, but certainly not in a few days. It's not in their interest to delete characters because there's then less of a chance of getting that player back as the person probably wouldn't want to start over.

So yes, just get hold of a copy of the game and add the code to your account and all will be fine (make sure to add it to the existing account though that has the early access code, not as a new account!)

I'm glad you wrote that. Considering some of the users here have accidentally created two separate accounts, is there a special place that I enter this new code, and not just enter it in the generic 'Welcome to FFXIV, enter your code now/oh dang, now I'm a new user' screen? Should it be done here on SE's website, or in the game client? Or will it be kinda obvious once I get past that registration code screen?

Since you quoted me directly I feel I should reply, but I'm afraid I don't know the answer to that question, I'm a 1.0 player whos account was imported across, aside from the early access code I haven't had to put in a game code since I originally did 3 years ago.

What I would suggest though is looking at the mogstation which is available:

After logging in you'll see a green section with some tabs (hopefully only 1) which has a title of "FINAL FANTASY XIV 1"

I don't know if within that tab there's an option to enter gamecode. Hopefully someone more knowledgeable can confirm what to do to make sure you don't create a second account. I have a feeling that the "Add platform" button at the bottom will make a second account though, so unless someone says otherwise, stay away from that!

Edit: From looking round, I think the answer is to enter it in game after logging in and selecting already have service account instead of add service account. Again I'd wait for someone else to confirm this though!

Wow, just got a physical copy, and I'm still told that the code entered is invalid.

I'm losing all patience with this game.

Sorry if you already realised this, but just in case, there's actually two codes in the physical version, one for the Square Enix members site and one for the actual game/service itself. The members/profile code is like their social website which you don't need if you already used an Early Access code. The other one which is somewhere in the box is what you need.

I'm sorry that you (and so many other people) are having so many issues. The whole registration/code setup does seem to be very overcomplicated now. When it works it's great, but it would seems there's a lot of places for it to go wrong

The game itself is amazing and (hopefully) if you can ever get it work you'll agree, but I appreciate right now right now you're probably hating it with a passion.

I'm afraid all I can really suggest now is contacting SE, which is probably what you're already trying Good luck!

Apparently a lot of people have gotten the wrong region's code in their physical copy, and it has been solved by contacting customer support provided that you then link it to the appropriate account (someone was complaining that after contacting them, it was linked to the wrong account).
