Nothing. FFXI is not difficult at all, it is just time consuming. Everything you do takes lots of time, not the fun kind of time also .... I seriously do not get what the fun is of staring at your screen for 3 hours and then losing a HNM claim to some random Japanese player with great latency (or a bot). That doesn't make you hardcore, just retarded.

I am fine with getting instanced hard HNM fights, Dyanmis kind of stuff and so on. It was challenging, but everyone with some kind of brain and skill could do those, it was not rocket science you know.
