did this at 42 on whm, died a few times healing and dodging and sleeping and worrying about the npc, then found that i just put cleric stance on and spammed stone2 and won.

I didn't find it that hard. Granted, I was at the cap. I did it as THM, not BLM. Having Protect and Stoneskin helped. Once you've killed all the adds but before he transforms, take advantage of the respite to make sure you and all the NPCs are healed up full. And yes, it really helps to just concentrate on the adds.

Done with a Black Mage, without exploiting the Echo buff (I usually deactivate it when it kicks in), so with the Echo buff it should laughable. "You can't do it" doesn't mean "It's impossible". Try to be creative with your strategy, analyze the surroundings. "Blizzard-Fire-Blizzard-Fire Win" is not a strategy. Try to intercept the incoming adds and free the NPCs: they're a great help but pretty fragile and pretty dumb (the Archer will go Leeroy Jenkins quite early). Cross-class Raging Strikes from Archer, it will give you a DPS boost in the final phase when you struggle to keep the NPCs alive. Also as the poster above suggest, try to do this as a THM with Protect on.
I did this on smn (easy) and my GF on BLM too (needed 2 tries).I'm a level 40 black mage and i absolutely can't do this quest, when i try the instanced part, i get to the stage where he transforms then he hits too hard, the wyvern he summons hits too hard and too frequently, between dodging AoE's and normal attacks i have little time to cast and when i do its for healing, so the NPC's die and i fail the quest.
I understand that the quest is instanced up to level 44 but I have no where left to quest and if you think I'm going to grind 4 levels at this stage of the game you're sadly mistaken. My friends who are paladins got through this quest and found it easy, its UNFAIR that DPS must struggle so much with the story line. If this isn't remedied i won't be subscribing past my free month, this is just one of many problems I've found with the game so far, these aren't MMO teething problems, they are the results of poor thought and evaluation.
Wow, really? Someone is having trouble with a quest, and you have to need to post telling them to leave FFXVI? "Well my BLM friend did it, so of course I know everything about it." Maybe you could ask your BLM friend for the strat for it?
Please, next time you post, have something good to say, or just skip to the next post.
I did this as black mage aswell. I "succeded" the first time (the game bugged out on me and he did not transform, quest failed as I got stuck for 20-30 min on killscreen) then I failed twice out of rage because of the bug so I only focused on bringing dragon down, big misstake.
When I finally succeded my strategy against dragon part was to pull the aggro of the adds. As I had healing spells I was able to handle their aggro without much help of healer. I AoEd them to death while the others focused on the main enemy. Then when the adds was down I took down the dragon. It is important to heal yourself so your healer can focus on healing the "tank" so getting to lv 4 in arc is a good idéa.
The sleep strategy might work aswell, but I felt like i wanted that extra XP from the adds to reduce the horrible grind you will start seeing on that point of the game.
It was rough as conj...I had to run in circles during the last part of the fight to get enough MP to cure Drillemont so he didn't die...
What you need to do... is make sure that you have the aggro of the dragon and make sure that the dragon always faces AWAY from the NPC's.
This is the first quest in the game where I actually started to get frustrated. I think the keys here to complete this is:
-As soon as the first adds spawn, kill them immediately, you need the archer alive.
-The main guy will immediately aggro you when he transforms, I ran around and avoided his damage until the tank NPC picked him back up. The boss can hit hard depending on class/gear.
-Kill the Wyvern immediately
-Kill second set of adds immediately
-if nothing else is up, focus on the boss without pulling aggro.
-Have a mega-potion, cure, or second wind (PGL ability) with you (protect helps a lot here)
I found this quest doing it at 40 (I was 40 DRG when I did this) is definitely do-able, but every detail matters and you need to be on your toes.
I didn't read the previous 5 pages of posts, so hopefully this helps!
I did it after a few tries on Monk, but that's only because "The Echo" makes things too easy tbh I prefer to not have the echo. The trick to every solo instance is of course to get it first try or to fail, learn more about your class and then win. Sometimes it just takes doing a few times and actually using a strategy and moving around instead of being in one place and subsequently not learning anything new and wiping continuously.
Oh and as most everyone else stated, kill the gods damned adds! Lol
