Bane does not break sleep. One of my favorite things about it is that it doesn't break it. You are right that I often steal agro though but it does NOT break sleep. Several places have been saying that it does but I simply don't see it waking up the mobs when I use it. Does it actually wake them up and just is glitched to still show them asleep?

am not sure about this, i thought application of DoTs will break sleep and that includes bane. But i can confirm that after DoTs and the mob get sleep, it does not break the sleep.
