They are actually called tanks for a reason, and it makes perfect sense. Tanks are huge, have heavy armor, are in the forefront of battle and are meant to take hits. Same as a CHARACTER (ha.) "standing up front with a sword and shield and yell at things until they hit." Why doesn't that make sense?I tell you what doesn't make sense, calling people "tanks." Sure I may have armor, but I move on legs not tracks, I don't have a gas tank, and I certainly don't have a large caliber gun I use in combat from a distance (WHICH WOULD BE AWESOME). Instead I stand up front with a sword and shield and yell at things till they hit me. There's nothing remotely tankish about me.

Character. I've played MMOs since EQ and it was always Character. I'm not a big fan of "toon" and I personally will never use it.

I only heard the term toon when WoW started to become popular, but that's not to say that the term hasn't been around before that. I for some reason, whether it be the lack of skill that WoW players tend to have and the horrible "know it all" attitudes about MMO's cringe whenever people use terms that WoW made more mainstream. Toon being one of them, also aggro being the other one. A large population call tanking "holding aggro" which I guess is true since its holding aggravation, but just seems lame.
Obviously as you can tell I'm bias towards any phrases that WoW made popular purely because of the annoying kids I had to deal with playing other MMOs. The phrase, "OH IN WOW IT WAS DONE LIKE THIS AND IT WAS SOOOOO MUCH BETTER!!!!111!". So yeah, I'm bias. I said it.
Toon is not a WoW term. It is an elitist term from FFXI that people used to refer to WoW players. People in WoW are just and pro/anti "toon" as people here are.
So please, stop with the stupid biases about an entire playerbase because of your ridiculous preconceived notions.
It's a word. It isn't any more ridiculous than calling someone a "tank", calling a monster a "mob", or calling a bunch of mobs a "train". There are hundreds of these sayings and nearly every one was being said LONG before WoW came out. Whether someone says toon or character has no bearing on what hey are actually like as a person, gives no indication on what games they have or have not played previously, and most certainly is not a reason to bag on someone.
Grow up already.

I say leave the Toon in the cartoony (stylized or whatever they call them) looking mmos.
I've been using PC or char since EQ but have no issue's with others using toon or whatever they want to call their character.

I call them Toon to make people cringe![]()
