first off... a cartoon is still most of all a two-dimensional, usually satirical (caricature, if you may) drawing. the 'animated' part is a relatively new definition, so get over it. obviously though, the 'original' cartoon makes it even more obvious why 'toon' for an MMO character is rather silly :P

then... DD also means direct damage, so using either DD or DPS is 'silly' if you come up with the argument 'dps means damage per second, that's not it' (and it would also mean people shouldn't ask for 'heals' but ALWAYS say 'need healer'.. why does nobody ever complain about people saying they 'have heals'? :P)

I'm not sure I would blacklist anyone over it but using 'whisper' also gets me. I mean you have to type /tell -- is that hard to get it right? lol

Well, other online games or services (MMOs, MUDs, MUSHes and BBS chats) have used /whisper for sending private messages to other players/users, so folks using that term were probably influenced by those. Referencing the post you replied to, I think DPS is a perfectly cromulent word because a DPS class is one that specializes in dealing high damage per second. Other classes may have some DPS, (and some DPS classes may have capacity for tanking or healing) but it's not their specialty.

As an old-school PnP RPGer, "character" is my term of choice.

The thing is DD can also mean damage dealer and is widely known as damage dealer. DPS has no other meaning other than damage per second so it's therefore always out of place. On the healer subject, I've never heard someone say they "have heals". If you say "I need a heal" or "need heal" you would be implying you only need 1 heal which would also make sense. It's all about context and the problem comes from education sadly. Text speak/internet speak etc has removed a lot of peoples needs for understanding contexts/plurals etc. Also auto-correct really doesn't help! I agree with you on toon though!

I use the exact same thing. Toon makes sense for cartoony looking graphics like WoW but for FFXIV? Not so much. I avoid saying Toon no matter much though.

I allways use character. First time I heard the word toon was on this fourm. Replace the n with a L and you get the real meaning behind that name.

I tell you what doesn't make sense, calling people "tanks." Sure I may have armor, but I move on legs not tracks, I don't have a gas tank, and I certainly don't have a large caliber gun I use in combat from a distance (WHICH WOULD BE AWESOME). Instead I stand up front with a sword and shield and yell at things till they hit me. There's nothing remotely tankish about me.

I wouldn't blacklist someone for unconsciously saying 'toon' (out of habit, for instance), but I would correct them. If they stubbornly insisted on using the term, then they'll get the /blacklist.

Ditto with 'Goon'

'whisper' doesn't bother me as much, but it's not helpful at all to new players who need to get used to /tell.

I like avatar or character, toon sounds like I'm in 'who framed roger rabbit' but to each his own, I do like the idea of calling it a persona SMT FTW LOL SUV
