Its like if you were a melee and you constantly get paralyzed every 8 seconds or so. You would DEFINITELY notice it.
Uh... what? You're confusing cause and effect here. If you get stunned the game makes sure you damn well notice it because you can't do ANYTHING. If your pet dies, you only notice if you specifically look for it. And you're looking for it because it is 25% of your damage, and not that you notice it because your damage lowers by 25%.

Like what Torin said, I think they key here is going into a fight knowing my pet is important to me.

If you went into a fight thinking you are just a DoT class, that your pet is a peripheral, sure you wouldn't notice if she died.

But she is my strongest "DoT" by far, and thus I pay attention that she is "up" if you will.

Again, this complaint has been brought up many times in this thread (I used to think this way as well, until I crunched the numbers). People say they want the pet to do more stuff, well, what is the pet going to do?

What if, whenever you cast your DoTs, instead its the pet that casts the DoTs? Is that actually a difference in playstyle?

When confronted with whether the pet is useful or not, I would say the pet is more useful than almost any pet in any other game (with the exception of BM hunters, for obvious reasons, but that is an example of player skills being moved to the pet just for the sake of being on the pet instead of the player).

And pet damage is significant, pet placement is key on many fights, and contagion and enkindle are certainly useful parts of your repertoire, that change the way you play.

The problem with the Summoner job is that instead of returning the job to its roots using Black Magic with basic white magic abilities and the ability to summon pets and primals they separated the dots from the Black Mage and gave it to the Arcanist.
They need to add Black Magic abilities up to Flare reduce the cd for enkindle to 150sec double it's attack power and add an ability to Summon the primal based on what egi is out with a 300 sec cd. We control the Primal for 30 sec when the timer is up it does it's signature attack and returns to the egi form.
