Because "dumbing down" = changing the game in such way that you have to think less and do less interesting decisions. Currently you should compare the value of organizing your retainer vs the gil you would have earned if you spent that time crafting instead.

By removing that step, you dumb down the game.

If you are for some reason unable to in any way organize your retainer so that you got a good idea of how many items you have. Then take a paper and write numbers down.

For instance here is a few methods I've used to "clean" my inventory and retainer:

1. Use ffxivdb or eorzapedia to see if the material is worth keeping for future crafts as convenience, then check market to see if I should sell it or throw away.

2. Organize by profession, such as skins in one part, ores/ingots in another part.

3. If you got many of an item (500+), you can keep like 400ish in retainer, and 100 in inventory, then whenever you are about to run out, you refill from retainer, and when retainer is about to run out, you refill from market.

There are many more methods of course.
