How to obtain a pet

I tried searching online and in these forums but i can not get a clear answer also because the game did not come with a physical booklet.

What i need to know is can any class get a pet or do you need to be a certain class?
If any class can get one where do you get them and which is the easiest to get?

I bought this game as an impulse buy while i was in gamestop yesterday so any help will be appreciated thank you

Well are you talking about a companion pet or are you talking about a minion. or are you talking about the Arcanist class carbuncle pet


1. Companion pet (Chocobo only) gained after you are able to purchase a chocobo at the Grand Company that you join roughly lvl 20- 25 in the main storyline quest. once you purchase the chocobo you have to go to bentbranch meadows and talk to an NPC there near the chocobo stable (not the chocobo porter sorry forgot NPC name citing this from memory) NPC name starts with an L he has a quest marker anyways do that quest then you get option to call chocobo as a combat companion. note you can not use any mount while chocobo companion is out.

2 Minions are gained in many different ways some are purchased , some are givin as quest rewards , veteran rewards, pre-order rewards. once you obtain one it should show up in your inventory as an item. use the item then the minion is placed in the minion action panel. open up action panel then click on your minion or drag the minion icon to your hotbar.

3. Carbuncle - this pet is class specific and can only be used by switching your class to Arcanist. Either start the game as Arcanist or if you choose to start the game as a different job you have to wait until you get to lvl 10 with your first class to get access to the Armory system. Once you have access to Armory you can switch classes provided you have gone to that class 's guild and have unlocked the class. But if you start the game in either Uldah or Gridania then you will not be able to join Arcanist guild until you get Airship access because the Arcanist guild is in Limsa Lominsa. Which is roughly lvl 15 in the main storyline quest.

4 Primal Egi --- forgot to mention . these too are specific to one Job ---- Summoner which is one of the 2 jobs that branch from Arcanist. you must become lvl 30 in Arcanist as well as lvl 15 in Thaumaturge and Conjurer ( once again I could be wrong about the cross class citing from memory)

5. Fairy -- Here is another pet that is specific to the job of Scholar which also branches from Arcanist

I assume you mean pet in the traditional sense as something that is helping you in the game/battles which means yes you would have to choose the class arcanist for that.

There are different kind of "pets".

There are minions, which are just pets that follow you around. You can get pets pretty easily by just playing through the main story quests. You get a Toy Airship and a Chigoe Larva within the first 25 levels. You can also buy some Minions from a NPC in cities with gil (in game money). Some Minions are only obtainable by being a Legacy player or by buying the Collectors Edition (mini behemoth) or perhaps by Veteran Rewards.

You also get a Chocobo by playing the main story quests. You can mount a chocobo for faster travel or you can have your Chocobo be a Companion. A Companion will fight with you as a party member and is AI controlled. You can change your Companions role (attacker, healer, tank) through commands.

You can also get Egi (summons) by playing the Arcanist class. You get a Carbuncle at a pretty early level. Egi will fight with you similarly to how a Chocobo Companion will. If you decide to level your Arcanist, you can get other Egi such as Ifrit, etc.

Thanks everyone that helps. I got a long way to go. I am only level 10 but with like no gil. If i get enough gil i will find a weapon to allow me to get carbuncle. Thank you again

Since you're level 10 all you have to do is go to the Arcanists Guild in Limsa Lominsa and join the arcanists guild. You will get a weapon as a reward for the first quest, which only involves talking to the guild master.
