I just ran into this for the first time last night on Sargatanas.
I can't say I didn't expect it. I'm sure it'll just become a part of playing in Eorzea, and I'm sure we'll all survive somehow.
Saw one on Hyperion early this morning in Ul'dah just spamming away in chat
"Everyone has something they hold dear, something they never want to lose. That's why they pretend. That's why they hide the truth. And that's why they lie."

I'm American by the way.
Majority of MMO players are American, gold buying became popular by EQ via eBay and slowly got to the multi-million dollar market it is today.
If I managed a RMT business and know most of my money will be from American players, guess where I'm going to market to make the most sells as possible?
That's not to say the Japanese don't deal with RMT but there's far less of them than there are of us.
