Having the same problem.
Having the same problem.
I uninstalled the game, then reinstalled it (yes, a two hour download) but it works again!
Have this problem since 24. december:
I tried:
- reinstall game
- run as admin
- put out antivir program
- reset internet setting
- reset the router
- all FF XIV files from a friend to a USB stick and on my pc
- pc clear with CCleaner
Didnt have any more ideas![]()
Here is a fix that worked 100% of the time for me, as this is an issue with the server and your computer's DNS:
Press Windows Key and R at the same time or go to your start menu and type in the search cmd
Type cmd and press enter
Type ipconfig /release and press enter
Type ipconfig /renew and press enter...wait 5 seconds for it to complete
Type ipconfig /flushdns and press enter
Try opening FFXIV again.

Have the same issue - even new installation dont work :S
Same issue & I don't feel like sitting for 2 hours trying to reinstall this.
So for people without anything that works here is a crazy idea that might give you some progress. I play on a Windows 7 PC but my friend has decided to switch from PS3 to PC. He has Windows 8, which I do believe to be the culprit behind this all, and has been having the "Unable to complete version check." error. So I have been busy trying to see why this might be. I decided to try the release ip and renew. No avail. I have tried everything from running as Admin and in Windows 7 compat. I have deleted the entire program only for the updated to patch to the 2013.12.12 version and error me out before I can even update. Then I got desperate. This is where despair helped me and I bring to you the only work around I have found:
Step 1:
Open the Command prompt. You will need to preload two commands. Go ahead and type and enter: ipconfig /release and then ener ipconfig /renew. Leave this Command prompt open!!!!! Now reconnect to your internet and lets move on.
Step 2:
Run the FFXIV program. Now the next steps only apply if your launcher takes a few minutes to give you an error. If so then awesome.
Step 3: SPEED IS KEY!
Immediately after opening move back to your command prompt. Hit up on the arrows and hit enter when you've brought back up the ipconfig /release. When this happens the launcher should have verified and moved on to the actual log in screen (If you are fresh installing like me it will have moved you to the terms and agreement page.) QUICKLY hit up again until you find ipconfig /renew and if you did it fast enough you will reconnect and the launcher won't error you out.
If this works you will have bypassed the error all together and have access to the log in screen. I am currently patching and hoping the patch fixes my issues. If not I will attempt this work around and if it continues to work and this work around works for others maybe someone can write a file to make this happen when you open the program every time until square fixes it. I will update with my progress and if anyone else tries this and it works I would like to know. Thank you for reading this and I hope this helps.
Also, if you know of a 100% non-retarded process to fix this please let me know.
