Taking too much damage as a Paladin?

Can anyone give advice as to how to lessen the damage I take as a paladin tank so my healer doesn't have to spam heal? Even popping my mitigation skills doesn't seem to help much.

That's pretty much all you can do.

And use your stun. The healer is supposed to spam heal though, even though I see a lot of fresh healers spamming stone, which renders then unable to cast cure for 4.5s.

I tend to roll cooldowns through boss fights and I always use a cooldown on every trash pull. You are able to get quite a few good ones from MRD and PUG. Other than that, there really isn't anthing else. Some monsters just hit damn hard.

I'm not sure what level you are, but assuming you're not level 40 yet, you have something to look forward to: Shield Oath. Reduces damage taken by 20% at all times. (with other stuff) It helps a lot!

I think the only real way to lessen the amount of damage you take is to have a lot of points into Dex and have gear with a lot of dex/str on it. That way you block/parry often and with high str you will block more. Other than that I have no clue. (Just theorycrafting btw)

make sure your gear is up to date. If your avatar information is correct and you are 26 I would assume you are probably doing Thousand Maws. With level 25 armor (no materia added) and rotating mitigation as needed it should be a snooze fest for your healer.

I suspect that until Paladins are geared and have access to all skills they'll be a bit squishy. Once you get to endgame and your mitigation is respectable should be good.

Normally how mitigation tanks work in other MMO's I've played.

Pretty much this. You need to have a good stat balance, high enough defense and other things before Glad/Pal will really show how strong they are at tanking.

Not sure what you guys are talking about lol. My gear is 5-7 levels below me and just through use of CD's and such I rarely see big dmg unless I screw up and don't get out of an aoe soon enough. PLD's have good mitigation the whole way up or so it seems. Did MRD in phase 3 and he took alot more dmg even though he had far better gear

The only time I have ever had trouble in a fight was when my healer was incompitent. I was tanking Thousand Maws and my healer decided to stand in the green aoe and die.
