Closing servers looks worse than anything else you can do to an MMO, because the ignorant masses will instantly assume the game is dying or doing badly.
Not to mention you WILL have individuals that do not want to move.
Auto-disconnect on AFK is pretty standard, and I'm surprised it was not implemented nor been discussed by the devs.
* The sad thing is that FFXIV turned RDM into a turret, and people think that's what it's supposed to be. It's supposed to combine sword and magic into something more, not spend the bulk of gameplay spamming spells and jump into melee for only 3 GCDs before scurrying back to the back line like good little casters.

Adding more servers won't solve the issue. You either have to continuously optimize how the server handles data queries, upgrade server hardware that can handle an increased volume from what the current hardware can handle, or create a secondary overflow server that works in tandem with the primary log in/instance server.
Obviously more servers wouldn't help. It's certainly not helping the JP datacenter players to play. Oh wait. It is. There are even a bunch of NA/EU people on JP worlds screwing around because they have nothing better to do. It's almost as if we need more NA/EU worlds than we need JP worlds. When I brought this up months ago the Beta forums just kind of laughed at me. They also said my friends getting on a legacy server would be no problem because SE clearly thought all this out blah blah blah.
I love the game, and fully support the dev team, but it's hard not to agree that NA/EU datacenter needs some serious relief so folks can actually play the game. More worlds and an "always-on" login queue instead of the "sometimes works" one we have now would be great. An idle timeout kick if those don't do the trick somehow. And maybe some world pass/friend codes so we can build the populations of existing locked worlds only with people who know somebody on that world.
I'm tired of listening to a couple of my friends QQ because they've been trying to get on Excalibur for a week and can't even make a character. Kind of silly. Help? Haha.
No. Honestly, they need more servers. When every server during pre-release early access for pre-orders only is completely filled past capacity to the point that scores of potential players aren't even allowed to make characters on any servers, much less play them... new servers are warranted.
The problem is that they knew all the servers were almost at peak capacity with concurrent users logged in on the first day of early access but still decided that it wasn't good enough to add more server for launch.
For the new players coming to FFXIV:ARR that live in the West coast region of NA, if you don't already have friends playing on an NA/EU server then I suggest creating a character on a JP server. The ping is the same as being on NA/EU server because the West coast is in the middle of the two data center regions.
I have no problem logging into Durandel JP legacy server. It feels so empy that I don't even see any shouts near the MB area in ul'dah.
My main character is on Excalibur and have been on Excalibur since 1.0. I've notice a pattern since EA that I can't log into the game until 10pm PST.
Edit: My solution would be to track how many people are trying to log in by:
1. Create a lobby server that holds all members awaiting to get into their server.
2. if the amount of players awaiting to get into their server is enough to fill up another server then I would add more servers.
3. Else, I would just let the amount of users trying to log in die down, and compare the numbers of subscribers I currently have with the total unit sales number to figure out how many subscribers I loss during this time.
Another solution to point players in the right direction, if they cared about ping, is to show their latency to the data centers and let them chose for themselves instead of creating regional list that shows no latency number but implies to the players that this region server is the best for them.
I also want to ask why they removed the population status of a server for the server list. I remember before choosing a server, it would tell me if the server population was already high, medium, or low. Why did SE take out this feature? Is it because all the servers on the server list are already at high pop?

I somehow doubt SE would deny access to thousands of players on launch day if their servers were capable of handling double or even triple their load.
The Reply to JP Players... And I Quote
[NA]Regarding Congestion in Japan Data Center Worlds (Aug. 27)
Thank you very much for playing FINAL FANTASY XIV: A Realm Reborn.
In order to be able to welcome a drastically greater number of players, we are starting as early as this week with preparations to increase our facilities, to be ready by early next week. Until that time, we will be continuing to implement these restrictions as required, and we ask for your understanding and patience.
*JAPANESE PROMISED MORE SERVERS WITHIN A WEEK*
