    Get gear. Spiritbond it to 100%. Don't sell it.

    Get a level 19 Disciple of the Hand (not cooking). Do the quest that opens materia (starts in the Bonfire)

    Convert your spirit bonded gear into materia.

    ???

    I've got lots of gear w/ 100% Spiritbond. And all my crafting classes are at least 24. The problem is, it keeps saying I don't have any materia to mend......

    there is an action to convert the spirit bonded item into materia,
    You have to do that first then meld.
