They are green when they're not spirit bound, and turn white when they are. It has nothing to do with their relative level to your own.

Ah, I've usually outleveled something around the same time it spirit bonded and never made that connection. In addition to that, despite sewing many a piece of vanya gear in the past, my WVR set had barely spirit bonded at all before 2.2, then suddenly it all (minus the new tool and glasses) must have spirit bonded within a couple of days, around the same time I got the new gear, leaving me with a bunch of white dots and the two new ones still being green. That further made me think that level had something to do with it, maybe iLvl compared to your highest iLvl equipped or something. Still didn't make the connection at all between dot colour and spirit bond. Good info to have. Thank you.
Not sure if anyone suggested this yet, but as of patch 2.21 no one really does FATE grinding parties anymore except for atma farming (atleast on my server anyway) and for people who like to hunt big game a.k.a Notorious Monsters a lot of the FATE NMs stay up longer since there's no large groups to spam and zerge kill them down real fast. So my suggestion would be how about adding some of the FATE NMs to the Hunting Log and to add to their drops maybe some vanity gear, stuff for housing, crafting or whatever.
This is just a starter idea I came up with and wanted to post before I head to bed, so anybody can feel free to twist and tweak to their liking.
This I agree with as big boss fates like in Coerthas, Costa and the chimera one no longer get done :/Not sure if anyone suggested this yet, but as of patch 2.21 no one really does FATE grinding parties anymore except for atma farming (atleast on my server anyway) and for people who like to hunt big game a.k.a Notorious Monsters a lot of the FATE NMs stay up longer since there's no large groups to spam and zerge kill them down real fast. No its nothing to do with being spiritbound.
It's all based off of gear's iLvl.
So if you have an i80 weapon, any gear that's i80 or above will show as green, any gear below i80 will show as white. And if you have an i95 weapon (Allagan, Leviathan) it still considers it as i90 for green/white. so with i95 weapon any i90 gear will also show as green.
Seems you fell for the same mistake I did but I just tested it. Wearing the new iLvl 70 needle, I equipped a freshly made HQ velveteen doublet of gathering (I'll give it to one of my retainers to wear after their venture finishes) and it appeared as a green dot, despite its significantly lower iLvl of 32. This indicates that the spirit binding colour coding theory is correct. No its nothing to do with being spiritbound.
