graphics very choppy / laggy -- video lag?

    Hi Everyone.

After painstakingly creating a character and watching the very choppy opening scenes, I think I have come to the conclusion my computer just can't handle this games graphics, even after I set the graphics lower in the settings menu.

I need help picking a new computer that can run this game and keep up with the graphics flawlessly. The one I currently have in an all-in-one computer and I dont think the video card can be upgraded?

I figure newegg is the place to go to buy a new computer, but I dont even know where to start there.

Well, I think the first thing that you are going to want to consider is your budget. How much can you spend on a new PC. I would then take the recommended requirements and then spec out a PC that is as close to those requirements it can be but still fit into your budget. You are definitely not going to want to use a onboard video card. You will need a decent graphics card to alleviate the choppy cut scenes. As for where to buy your PC, I would just shop around for the best deal. Newegg, Amazon, TigerDirect, Dell, HP, Best Buy, etc. Figure out what you want your specs to be and the look around and find the best price. Below are the requirements for Minimum and Recommended:

    FXIV: ARR Minimum System Requirements

    Operating System: Windows® Vista 32/64bit, Windows® 7 32/64 bit
    Processor: Intel® Core™2 Duo
    Graphics: NVIDIA® Geforce® 8800 Series, ATI Radeon™ HD 4770
    Memory: 2GB (4GB recommended for 64bit OS)
    Disk Space: 20GB.

You may notice that these are lower than the minimum system requirements for v1.0. This is because Square Enix wants the game to be more accessible and run on a wider range of PCs.

    FXIV: ARR Recommended System Requirements

For the best performance you should aim to run the game on a system with at least these specifications.
    Operating System: Windows® 7 64 bit
    Processor: Intel® Core™ i5
Graphics: NVIDIA® Geforce® GTX 660 or higher, AMD Radeon™ HD 7950 or higher
    Memory: 4GB of RAM.
    Disk Space: 20GB.

Hope that helps you get started.

Thanks, My Budget is around $1,000 for a tower, and I do want something pre-built. I originally wanted an all in one again, but after some google searching I found that everyone reccomends getting a traditional tower for gaming.

Also, If I purchase a computer with Windows 8 instead of 7, will that be an issue?

if you have a $1000 budget, then you can easily buy an i7 processor and a video card above a GTX 660, close this thread and do some reseach.

I'm always leery of any new Microsoft OS so I stuck with Win7. We do have Win8 here at work and it seems to be pretty stable but I am not sure about video card drivers and Win8 yet so you might want to check your video cards support forum to make sure Win8 supports it. For $1,000, you shouldn't have a problem at all getting a PC that will run FFXIV without a problem. I also recommend going with a tower and then getting a good HD monitor to go with it. They have Desktop packages that come with the tower and a monitor. The prices of those have really drop and are now very affordable.

As quick search on Best Buy came back with this:

HP Pavilion with 23' LED Monitor (Falls above the minimum range) - $660

Cybertron Gaming Desktop w/o Monitor (In the recommended range) - $785

Heres what Ive found so far. Slightly above budget, and only "meets" the reccomended requirements. I'd like something that exceeds it a little.

What do you think of that one?

If you can afford that, it is definitely where you would need to be. I build my pcs part by part but alot of people don't know who to and also don't want the headache so if you can afford it and don't want the hassle, buy it prebuilt. If you have a HD TV, remember that can server as your monitor too so you wont have to buy an additional one. Keep researching, you'll be fine.
