I've had this happen on a few occasions and usually restarting the game will clear the error. In one case, I had to reboot my PC. It's a driver failure and recovery that happens (and why the screen blacks out). My gfx card (GTX 670 FTW) also shoots up in temp. Normally I don't go any higher than 66c when playing on full screen, maximum settings, but saw it shoot up as high as 77c after a "blackout." I'me currently using the latest beta drivers for Nvidia as well.
This isn't the only game where I've seen this happen though. I frequent Second Life and have seen it happen on occasion with the same effects of frame loss and temp. The only other commonality that I can see is this also seems to only happen when I have Chrome running in the background with a good number of tabs open.
Core i7 3770k (overclocked) running at approx. 4.1Ghz
Nvidia EVGA GTX 670 FTW (overclocked)
8GBs RAM (overclocked)
All overclocks are conservative and not "maxed"
