Consequences of leaving a grand company?

I've been flicking through the live letters and I can't see anything that tells us about the consequences of leaving a grand company.

Since the game is very oriented toward casual players, I'd hope there was no consequence. I'd like to be able reach the top rank in all of them, at separate times of course, but I don't like the idea of having to start as a private again when rejoining an old grand company.

Main point is I want to be a Maelstrom, but I still want the ability to get the achievements for the other grand companies, then return home to Maelstrom ideally without starting back at ground zero.

"Players cannot join all three companies, they must choose one and are 'locked' into it. However, they are only locked into a Company after the Recruit rank, which means that you can be a Recruit on all three Companies at the same time."

Likely data from the first launch, but I haven't seen anything that would make this info invalid.

It's possible to change Grand Companies, but you need to be the proper rank to do so. Once reaching the rank of Second (Storm/Serpent/Flame) Lieutenant, you'll be able to switch to a different Grand Company.

For those of you coming back to the game from 1.0 and have reached the time when you need to select your Grand Company, please be aware that if you choose a different Grand Company from that which you belonged to during 1.0, you will start from the bottom rank and have to work your way up.

After reaching Second (Storm/Serpent/Flame) Lieutenant and you make a decision to go back to your original Grand Company, the rank you attained with that Grand Company will be restored. (They'll welcome you back with open arms…most likely. )
