This game is not just mash aoe hate generators like other mmo's Conj and thaum both have sleeps to help with pulls and adds just like the carbunicle can

Most fights go like this

1) tank generates hate on first target,
2) sleep other mobs
3 proceed

Personally, I find the topaz carbuncle a bit of a nuiscance. Now I understand using the duty finder you dont always get the best tanks. So there is a need for it. But once you see that your tank is doing the right things and not losing enmity, switch it over. Help out with DPS. We got this.
