SEGA did the same thing I think. I remember seeing a Total Biscuit rant about how sega docked him two copyright infringement points for reviewing two of their games. So now he is doing a blanket ban of all sega games as protection...goodby to segas free advertising to a couple hundred thousand people...for no reason.

The weird part about that one too is that Sega randomly decided to put out copyright claims on every video they could find on Youtube that even MENTIONED Shining Force 2, even if they didn't use footage from the game. I'm pretty sure the videos TB had that got taken down weren't reviews (not sure why he'd be reviewing a 15-year-old Sega Genesis game) but yeah, that whole thing is just strange.

I just don't understand how some of the people on these forums refuse to understand that the larger youtubers and streamers DO in fact make a difference. If they didn't every company would have had SOE's initial policy. Nor would SOE have changed the policy. Nor would SOE have paid TotalBiscuit to stream FF13-2 knowing he was going to talk about what was bad in the game. Nor would Blizzard have given every medium to large streamer/youtuber a beta key to Hearthstone and told them to go forth and make a ton of money on the new hype game.

You don't have to like it. But the facts are obvious like it or not. Hell I personally wouldn't have bought this game had I not seen ItmeJP stream it for a couple hours before he realized he couldn't due to policy since I wasn't able to partake in any beta and SOE keeping the NDA up even through OPEN BETA. It made me leery of the game.

The fact that you don't understand it doesn't mean it's not there. Visibility is the first staple of advertisement, and that's exactly what those videos provide.

If you guys missed it, seems like it so I will quote it, people keep raging and pointing fingers at people that want to make a living from what they love doing, guess it is wrong we all should be in a dark office drinking coffee with a $50 USD suit and a phone ringing all day. The ideal real job...

In order to write a clarifying article on the issue I sent a mail to my PR contacts at Square Enix USA, and they confirmed that the first part is the correct one. Here's the response from Senior PR Manager David Yang.

Hope this puts some streaming and video-making souls more at ease. You can monetize your content freely on youtube/twitch etcetera as long as you follow the other rules.

The only real music restriction that needs to be changed is this one:

When showing gameplay, you may not replace the FFXIV music with third party music;

Perhaps change the line to:

When showing gameplay, you may not replace the FFXIV music with copyrighted third party music, unless you receive explicit permission from the copyright holder.

Which will allow for news gaming channels to cover it properly and give machinma guys more leeway with what they want to create while removing raid videos playing Evanescence songs in the background, because who wants to see that right?
