Someone on Something Awful admitted to staying AFK all night

and they were still logged in this morning.

This is unacceptable. Every online game has an afk kick timer. Put one in and the login problems will decrease.

These damn goons take over every MMO they play and now they're exploiting the system to keep other players from being able to login.

FFXI didn't have one. It had the option to turn off the auto log out after a period of time of inactivity. So that won't do much good if people can turn it off.

Times change, AFK kicker pls. I even just up and leave the game when I know I'm going to be gone a while.

Not to mention, served a purpose given that player run bazaars were an important thing to effectively trade and make gil (at least, when I played).

When I say that, Retainers as I've heard, will be online while you're offline.
So there's no need for AFK selling anymore.

So have several people on reddit, and I'm sure there are thousands more who are doing the same thing. I probably would too if I finally managed to get in after 16 hours of fruitlessly trying.

Yeah turning on a auto kick feature that you cannot turn off would go a long way into helping the server load. as it is now it doesn't work

As the leader of Please Be Careful/Dragongod Knightkings, the twin Something Awful Free Companies, I can confirm that this is the case. Some members are remaining online to ensure they can play when they have free time.

However, I don't believe that members of PBC/DGKK are the only ones taking advantage of the lack of an idle timeout. This is a problem endemic to every server and community, and will regrettably continue to be so until either the severe login restrictions are lifted or an idle timeout is added.

I apologize if I came across as defending them. I personally think it's selfish to take up one of a limited number of login spots. I'm also not able to personally control or monitor every single person from SA who also plays FFXIV, so unfortunately my hands are tied here; even if I remove them from the FC, they'd still be able to idle, so that wouldn't resolve the issue.

If you have any further concerns, please let me know and I'll strive to address them.
