Why Are NA & EU Not On Separate Datacenters Like JP Is?

Like the post title says, I'd like us to pull an answer out of SE.

Why on Earth would you put JP, a small (although populated) island, on its own datacenter, and NOT put Europe and North America, which are MASSIVE (AND populated), on their own datacenters?

The reason the Japan servers are stable is because they have a whole datacenter to themselves. Why are us North American players not on our own datacenter, and Europe on their own, to alleviate the stress?

This is a glaring design flaw, and I'd like to hear the actual reasoning behind it. It seems like most of these load issues could be avoided if that simple step had been taken.

Size and actual population have nothing to do with that choice, it was made based on target audience and expected player base.

Turns out ALOT more NA/EU players actually are looking for a new MMO than SE expected, and due to this we have had a bit more issues. I'm sure that if SE knew this beforehand they would have made the NA/EU data canter much larger, or done separate ones for each area. They could only go by pre-order numbers (not recent but months back), FFXIV 1.0 purchase numbers, and likely FFXI data to make such choices.

IMO, FFXIV has the potential to be the next big MMO if they have done the endgame correct (story not yet told), and many people have taken to this because there is nothing else good to play atm and it has vastly overshot SE's expected population and the expected errors/issues from this have shown up. They will fix it and work it out in due time, NO MMO launch is truly smooth and they take more then 48hrs to fix all the issues.

Best answer I could find. Seems to me like they misjudged the population.

Misjudging the population is fair, I guess, but that still seems like a really awful oversight. Putting a single country on one datacenter and the rest of the world on the other was bound to create problems, I don't need a degree in computer science to tell you that.

I'd really like to hear if they have plans to fix this, because I don't see what they have to lose in making a third datacenter and splitting the NA/EU load in half, rather than have to shut the servers down three times a day.

I definitely think they underestimated the demand for a solid MMO right now. Especially a console based one. On the much brighter side we are more likely to get quality updates, add ons, and expansions because of this. Worth sticking it out. Besides, I love this game and my Guild!

Because their European Headquarters probably didn't want the task of managing and maintaining the European Servers, so the American branch got stuck with the task.

The way I see it, it's because the vast majority of Europeans speak fluent English, the vast majority of North Americans also speak some sort of English, the Japanese on the other hand prefer to speak Japanese so having a server where you can /sh in your native tongue or a language you are very comfortable with (in the case of Europeans) is a pretty good reason to give servers based on a common language.

It's not about common language. The fact is the EU datacenter should not be the same as the US/NA Data Center. There should be 3 separate Regional Data Centers, each with their own 20+ servers.
