At this rate I think the only launch window that's gone worse than this one is 1.0.....

This is classic SE here and in FFXI. It sometimes took 2-3 DAYS just to download an update. BETA is over. When people who paid money to play a game, cant even get into the game, I'm sure they will just say "Oh well, it will fix soon enough, and while I wait I'll just go sign up for the monthly sub.
That's really your own fault then. It's the player's (and player's friend's) decision to play on crowded servers. When you and your friends decided to play on a high population server, the risk you took was that it would be full. This isn't a new concept and has been a source of needless whining for years every time a new game is launched. Either wait and be patient (possibly making a temporary character on a different server) until servers level out, or get your friends to move to a different server with you. Those are the only two options when you choose a popular server.People tomorrow? People can't play now. I've been waiting for a particular server to open up for new character creation since Early Access began and it hasn't. (Not one time)
Some are suggesting I make a character on a server WITHOUT MY FRIENDS/LS/GC and HOPE FOR A TRANSFER. (Which would most likely cost more than what I paid just to play in the EA which I can't (w/ said friends) do.)
If SE came out and told us to go ahead and make a character on a low populated server and I could transfer later for FREE, I would be okay with that, even though it's still a crime that I can't play a "community based" MMO with my friends since I paid for EA.
Just curious, what server are you trying to get on? I assume the reason you didn't mention the name is because somewhere subconsciously you know that it's a highly popular server and are reluctant to accept that it's you and your friend's fault for choosing a high pop server.
Funny, i thought that's what the beta was forIn simplest terms, there isn't any one piece that is overloaded there are a few. What they monitor is as they increase the load, how the different server process (yes there is more than one per game shard) are handling the load. From there they identify a potential fix or some sort to increase performance, balance load etc, but continue to increase gradually monitoring the different processes, especially as players progress through the lower content to higher.
Sadly, it is a slow process as getting information takes time, since you can't just go 'Ah! That's the problem!' and usually takes large usage and debugging to find out specifically where it all goes boom.
name another mmo that was PERFECT on day 1 that had this many people interested in playing seriously. shit happens. If anything it will get rid of the crap players back to wow.
Tell me, how do you know a server is high pop. until it's high pop.? How do you know it will be locked, until it locks?
Tell me, how are my friends supposed to know the server they chose while I was on vacation was going to not allow me to create a character on it? They are all on because they had created characters on it prior to being locked. I am just a "late comer" (in EA?) and have been stuck at the World selection screen since release.
Yes.... all my fault. My fault they tell you to be careful to choose your server, as you cannot change once it's chosen. (Read on World selection screen) Then as a server is locked, says to play on another server (without my buddies....) or wait until the restriction is lifted. So I chose to wait. Refreshing every 3 minutes for 3.5hrs straight, while chatting with them. Mind you, the server wasn't full, as characters that were previously made were logging on.
...
Of course I knew my server was going to be high pop. Cause of the issues they had with P4, but then again, so did Square Enix. And by that point people were already invested in a server they had no idea would completely lock me out of playing. (Had they known this, we wouldn't have picked the server) But by all means, 10+ people should leave the server they have sunk hours of gameplay into because SE has put a lock on new character creation....
I was prepared for a queue. I was even prepared to wait for the lock to be lifted. We didn't even get communication about the situation until 17.5hrs. of people being locked out from their server of choice. Then it got brushed under the table. (We know you cannot join your friends, sorry. Please play on low pop. server)
I don't know how you can white knight this. For a community driven game, it sure doesn't make a lot of sense how SE is handling the situation.
They could have done early LS/GC registration for World selection.... tiered Early Access starting times... but this is what happened, and this is how they are handling it.
On top of it all, they have people like you making life hell for people like me that just want to play on the same server in a MMO with their friends.
Come back during official release and tell all the new players they can't play with anyone that started the game already. Cause they obviously should have known.
