This has been going on for a long time now, with dozens upon dozens of threads.
SE's paraphrased response (Neutral party here, not taking either side, and not a real quote, hence "paraphrased"):
"We have massively shortened the maximum queue line, and if you try to login when the queue is filled, you will get error 1017. This is to prevent server crashes due to congestion."
here is a crazy idea.... Fix it and quit putting band-aids on it. I was hoping the day before OL, this would be resolved. When? I have read quite a bit but no answer to WHEN the servers will be "normal"
You must be new to MMO launches. Every game struggles out of the gate to figure out what their servers loads are going to be. Things will not be resolved for at least a couple of weeks probably.

Point number 1: FFXIV has about 20 servers for Japan alone.
Point number 2: North America and Europe have about 20 servers between them.
Point number 3: In order to reduce server load on North America and European servers, Square Enix has decided to severely restricted log-in access for those subscribers.
As opposed to say...adding more servers?!?
If I were to read between the lines, I could conclude that they are basically saying, "We don't want Westerners to play this game."
What will end up happening, though, is all those Americans and Europeans will just roll characters on the Japanese servers.
More like into "we love japan because we are from Japan, you must be grateful we even translated this game for you western scum, now go wait in your queue. Oh wait, 1017 fufufufufufu"Point number 1: FFXIV has about 20 servers for Japan alone.

According to the launcher we're in official service now. Although I don't know how they can claim "service" if people can't log in.It was a bit comical during early access, but now in official release it's lost it's humor.
I suppose I'll just have to try until I finally get in, then never log out again. The electric company is going to love me.
* Also, at this rate early access was a complete waste of time. There's no way I'm putting in my code and start paying for this until they get this stuff sorted out.

"If you ain't paying you ain't playing."
Lol, logged in after an hour of waiting, and after 10 mins of play, got booted out. Now it's 2 1/2 hours of playing the 1017 game (not really blaming the afk'ers for wanting to stay in because of this either). Gotta love it. Good thing I have more then most in the way of patience. I am loving the game and hope they do get these issues resolved soon.
I just kept spamming log in tonight and I was able to get in after about 10 times. I was never able to get in last night
