Here is a Paladin that can't roll on loot. In this case it's a tank that can't roll on tank loot. There goes your spurious arguments.

There's a lot of context you don't seem to understand. Just because it says disciple of war does not mean it was tank gear. Greed kills folks.http://forum.square-enix.com/ffxiv/t...le-of-War-item

Working as intended, you can only roll need on gear that is suited to your class, not all gear you "can" equip. It may have been an upgrade for you in defence and strength but it was primarily an upgrade in overall tank stats, not overall DD stats, you just so happen to share one of those stats.
You would be crying the other direction if a tank rolled need and outlotted you on the DD body (hi2u DDWARs from the beta forums) that has a fraction of the defence of his tanking gear.
EDIT: There's also WAR/PLD/DRG gear that tanks cannot roll need, guess what, they have DD stats on them.

It may increase your strength and defence by 8 but a similar helm might drop that would increase strength and another stat (for the sake of argument let's say agility). You would obviously need that more than the tank but if he rolled on it nd won it would you be happy with that outcome? Kinda doubtful. Just because something can be used by you does not mean you should be using it.
I don't like the fact that EA deems themselves the experts on gear selection. If it says LNC, a lancer should be able to roll need. Not having that choice is a step closer to pigeonholing people into roles and removing gear selection even further.
All rings and earrings are labelled as "All jobs", does that that mean LNC should be able to lot on INT earrings on par with THMs and SMNs? Hell no, they have no use for the stat.
DD gear lacks parrying as a stat, tank gear generally lacks determination and/or skill speed at lower levels. The game itself pidgeonholes you into a role, if you wanted to be a tank, you'd level a tank, not gimp it up on LNC and lose hate to a "DD" marauder using lower defence gear.
A pair of hands that would have been an upgrade for my PLD dropped, they had higher defence than my current, couldn't need it, they were statted towards DDs, did I cry? No, I waited for tanking gear to drop and lotted on that instead.
It would be different if it was outside of an instance you would beable to pick it up and equip it just fine. The implementation of only being able to roll on gear that would benefit your class (Stat wise) is good imo it saves people in dungeons rolling on stuff that would be a lot better suited to a different class. The fact you can wear it as well as the gladiator is fine as if you find that piece solo you can still equip it.
still seems odd since I guess we are talking about the warden's barbut here. it doesn't fit the the common tank gear rule where def and m.def are equal. also def is lower than the lv23 normal item, doesn't sound tankish to me.
do you happen to have needed before on that run?
Edit:
but that would drop in halataliI would say they are talking about http://xivdb.com/?item/2721/Doctore's-Chain-Coif the dorctore's chain coif considering he said it gave him a +8 to both mdef and def which is indeed a tank helm and gives him determination and parry which is deffinetly tank orientated.

I noticed this myself on my PLA with a shield, I could not roll need on it although it was GLA / PLA / XXX / YYY / ZZZ
Looking closely at the stats although the item CAN be equipped by a PLA / GLA the stats were not for that class, it was full of MND and INT more for a CNJ / WHM / BLM / THM setup. I assume this is why I could not 'need' the item.
Just because you CAN equip it does not mean you SHOULD and it may be a better fit for someone else in your party who gets to roll Need instead of Greed.
