Probably not processor heat, unless your CPU heatsink is caked with dust under the fan. More than likely it is a power supply problem, possible overheat (I just fixed a PC with about 6 metric tons of dust bunnies IN the power supply), or a memory IRQ error.

Well, I'd first check your error logs as was suggested before. How to view those varies from OS to OS.

More than likely you'll find a driver conflict or memory error causing the crash.

If not, try swapping out a different PSU or picking up a cheap one. If that doesn't make a difference, most PC stores (not Best Buy type stores, but actual local PC shops) will let you take it back without issue, especially if you let them know you're troubleshooting.

Okay,so I found this, it's the only error on there at around the time it happened:
Event filter with query "SELECT * FROM __InstanceModificationEvent WITHIN 60 WHERE TargetInstance ISA "Win32_Processor" AND TargetInstance.LoadPercentage > 99" could not be reactivated in namespace "//./root/CIMV2" because of error 0x80041003. Events cannot be delivered through this filter until the problem is corrected.

No clue what that means,so if someone could translate it for me I'd be very grateful

Looks like you have a WMI permissions issue.
    MS has a fix (win7) http://go.microsoft.com/?linkid=9775756
run the fixit to correct the WMI permissions - this should resolve your log error.
for safety i'd recommend doing a chkdsk/f on your drive followed by a sfc /scannow to repair and filesystem corruption

then try running ffxiv again to see if it crashes

Not too long ago windows 8 had a few updates that were not compatible with the windows 8 "fast boot" feature, cuasing all sorts of random PC shut downs for no apparent reason, try disabling the quick boot feature. If you use windows 8

Using windows 7, heard some things that put me off windows 8.

This problem has got me stumped. It looks like it's not a PSU problem after all,but I can't make heads or tails of this error message, really, really need help.

is this the right forums to be asking about PC problems? I think this is best asked on computer forums where PC experts frequent.
