Retainer + market system is fine as is. Never has been and never will be the need for generic AH. The ability to preview weapons / armor has nothing to do with the market system, its a feature that has never been tied to the AH features and they have already mentioned plans of doing so.

And yea, you can see both the current price listings for the item you are trying to sell, as well as the sale history, right from your retainer. No need to run back and forth. So out goes the primary problem. Then, having to summon your retainer from the bell to list stuff is a non-issue. You would have to "summon" your auction listing too.
