You'll only need to have one of the subclasses at level 15 to unlock the job (the one mentioned in the class level requirement list). How high you'll want to level the subclasses depends on which abilities you want to use from them (after taking a quick glance on class abilities the highest cross-classable abilities for every class seem to be level 34, so that's where you're likely to level both of your sub-classes).

Hello new players, welcome to XIV!![]()
I know I'm rezzing a VERY old thread, but I was searching for job requirements on Google and this was one of the top results, so I better update this:
As of 4.0 (Stormblood), the secondary class requirement has been removed. You only have to level the base job to 30 to be able to unlock their respective jobs. Still somewhat beneficial to level another class to use some of their roles on your main (like the cooldowns that come in handy for tanks, and please correct me if this is even necessary to do because I'm not completely sure if they changed this, too), but you are no longer required to level them.
I think you do have to complete the MSQ Sylph Management, though, to begin them.
So, new list as of 4.0:
- Bard = 30 Archer
- Summoner = 30 Arcanist
- Scholar = 30 Arcanist
- Dragoon = 30 Lancer
- Black Mage = 30 Thaumaturge
- White Mage = 30 Conjurer
- Monk = 30 Pugilist
- Warrior = 30 Marauder
- Paladin = 30 Gladiator
- Ninja = 30 Rogue
NOTE: Rogue is not an available starting class in the game as it was introdeuced in a patch. It is available to unlock once you get another DoW or DoM class to level 10.
The following have no bass class requirements. However, you need to be level 50 in a Disciple of War or Magic (doesn't matter which one), have the HeavensWard expansion, and have access to Ishguard (where the starting job quests are located).
- Dark Knight
- Astrologian
- Machinist

Role abilities are learned by all jobs of the role. There is no mechanical reason to level a second class.Still somewhat beneficial to level another class to use some of their roles on your main (like the cooldowns that come in handy for tanks, and please correct me if this is even necessary to do because I'm not completely sure if they changed this, too), but you are no longer required to level them.
Otherwise mostly right. Here are a few clarifications.

I would also add that, unless you start off in Limsa Lominsa, you will be unable to unlock Rogue until you complete the Gridania or Ul’dah starting city quest story, and make your way into Limsa during “The X Envoy” Main Scenario Quest. As far as I know, the Vesper Bay ferry will not function until after you pass this point in the story, and Limsa is still isolated from the rest of Eorzea until you start the Envoy quest chain.

I know it’s been a little over a year since this was posted, but I don’t know if it was changed or not, but currently SAMURAI & RED MAGE only require LVL 50 in any DoW or DoM to Unlock them.

Starting city-state: Gridania
—Lancer (melee DPS)
—Archer (physical ranged DPS)
—Conjurer (healer)
Starting city-state: Ul’dah

*NOTE: Rogue requires players to have a level 10 Disciple of War or Disciple of Magic in order to unlock. Players must complete their level 10 class quest in order to unlock the ability to join other guilds. Rogue is only available early on to players that start in Limsa Lominsa. Players that start in Ul’dah must start the Main Scenario Quest “The Ul’dahn Envoy” in order to unlock Limsa Lominsa. Players that start in Gridania must start the Main Scenario Quest “The Gridanian Envoy” in order to unlock Limsa Lominsa.
The following jobs are available upon reaching level 30 in the applicable Disciple of War or Disciple of Magic class. Players must first complete each applicable level 30 class quest, and complete the Main Scenario Quest “Sylph-management”. Only the base game is required to unlock these jobs:
—Paladin: Level 30 Gladiator required
—Warrior: Level 30 Marauder required
—White Mage: Level 30 Conjurer required
—Scholar: Level 30 Arcanist required**
—Monk: Level 30 Pugilist required

—Black Mage: Level 30 Thaumaturge required
—Summoner: Level 30 Arcanist required**
**NOTE: The Arcanist class splits into the magical ranged DPS Summoner and the healer Scholar at level 30. Both will be leveled simultaneously with one another; as a player levels one job, the other will level alongside it. Players have the option of unlocking both jobs once they have fulfilled the requirements for them, or just unlocking one; but the other cannot be leveled separately.
The following jobs are available upon reaching level 50 in any Disciple of War or Disciple of Magic, and upon reaching the city-state of Ishgard; requires the expansion Final Fantasy XIV: Heavensward to be registered to the service account:

All jobs can be unlocked in the city-state of Ishgard. Ishgard is unlocked to players in the Main Scenario Quest “Coming to Ishgard”.
The following jobs are available upon reaching level 50 in any Disciple of War or Disciple of Magic. There are no Main Scenario Quest requirements for unlocking these jobs (with the exception of Blue Mage; noted below); requires the expansion Final Fantasy XIV: Stormblood to be registered to the service account:
—Samurai (melee DPS)
—Red Mage (magical ranged DPS)
—Blue Mage (Limited Job) (magical ranged DPS)***
Both Samurai and Red Mage can be unlocked in the city-state of Ul’dah.
Blue Mage can be unlocked in the city-state of Limsa Lominsa.
***NOTE: Blue Mage is a Limited Job, and requires the completion of the Main Scenario Quest “The Ultimate Weapon” to unlock. As a Limited Job, the job cannot currently progress past the level cap of 50 (soon to be changed to a level cap of 60 in Patch 5.1), and has various restrictions surrounding its gameplay. See this link for a comprehensive list of all restrictions (listed under the “Battle Systems” section, “Limited Jobs” subsection).
The following jobs are available upon reaching level 60 in any Disciple of War or Disciple of Magic. There are no Main Scenario Quest requirements for unlocking these jobs; requires the expansion Final Fantasy XIV: Shadowbringers to be registered to the service account:
—Gunbreaker (tank)
—Dancer (physical ranged DPS)
Gunbreaker can be unlocked in the city-state of Gridania.
Dancer can be unlocked in the city-state of Limsa Lominsa.

Also add to the red mage / samurai notes: the unlock quests for both these jobs start in Ul'dah.
