While this may not fit into everyone's mind as a solution, it did for me. I was meaning to buy a new one anyone because the one I had was a 12yr old 1080i LCD Projection TV. Plugged the PS3 up to the new tv and did the display settings on the ps3 and viola, it looks normal. And the damn picture is so clear!! Before the words on the map were fuzzy and I couldn't read the chat logs unless I was right in front of the tv. I set the HUD display to the defaults and everything is right where it should be. I can see the whole chat window plus spaces to the left of it. The minimap is in the right spot. Even item windows I can now see the bottom of them.

I don't know if it was truly the new tv or turning off the upscaler option in the ps3, or maybe something else, but I can say that the display rendering on the ps3 is not the issue. That is probably why there aren't any talks about fixing it, there is nothing wrong with it. The developers are prob. using the top of the line brand new 1080p tvs and they don't see what we were seeing so they don't know how to address it. It's hard to fix a problem if you can't reproduce over and over again.

Just my 2 cents. Man the picture quality is actually really good on the ps3, at least for me because I was looking at a crappy picture before.

Just remembered one other thing I did differently is I hooked the ps3 up directly to the tv. Before I had the HDMI going to HDMI switchbox.

Here is what my picture looks like now after restoring the defaults for the HUD display settings:
I'm confused. Did you purchase a new TV AND turn off the ps3 upscaler? I will try turning off the upscale option, but seeing as that only affects ps1/ps2 games, I don't expect any improvement whatsoever on this ps3 game. As far as your TV is concerned, yes, not all TVs are affects by the problem -- and yes this is a problem. So if I were to purchase a new TV, what's to say that TV will or will not be impacted by this problem? Also, the minimum system requirements and recommended settings do not call for a new TV purchase.

i find it odd that it may be a hardware issue.. because I had absolutely no problems when i used the same TV (LG 32LC7R) with the PS3 phat. i've only noticed this on my super slim, which i also incidentally got for XIV ARR so i've no idea if other games are affected as yet
This is not a common problem, as this is the only game I've had the issue with, and also had no option to alleviate the issue. I will check out the PSN store though to confirm. I think it's funny that even game demos address this issue. I downloaded the Diablo III demo and the first thing that appeared after launching the demo the first time was a mandatory screen to fit the game picture to my TV screen.

Sometimes I can't read the entire info box that comes up when you check out a weapon or armor. There are more severe bugs in the Game but that's still something I would like to see fixed at some stage.

Samsung 42"" flat, do not have the model name in my head. If this info is needed, I am going to add it.

I would say try unplugging your HDTV cables and throwing them away to only use the HDMI cord, then adjusting your TV to wide. Outside of that in not sure as SE has said this is an issue with the TV and should be fixed on the user end. Although for some the only way to fix this is to purchase a new TV.

Turn off overscan. On Samsung TV's it is called "Screen Fit". Exact same thing I did and it fixed the issue.

    A Contribution to Solutions

I'm a PS3 & PC player. I played on PS3 for a while then moved to PC, but on the same television. I read all of your solutions and none of them seemed to mention any form of DPI settings.

    Forewords:
I'm sure depending on the generation of your TV, it may or may not operate more like a large tablet PC (Smart TV), meaning that it more than likely has some kind of GPU-like device in it to display the UI.

    Background:
During my use of PC, I ran into an issue regarding the DPI-Scaling options where I had to disable them and run my screen in 720 in order to fix full-screen displays of certain games and applications, to make them work properly.

    Suggestion:
Look on your TV for any settings regarding DPI-Scaling and see if you can disable or enable it, or even modify it. Some UI's may allow you to literally SCALE what is viewed on the screen. For instance, you mention that you tried to mess around with the edges by moving the display itself, but this would lead the opposite edge to be cut-off more, and so on. DPI-Scaling is something some console games allow you to do upon initial play of the game.

Typically what you get is 4 arrows on each edge of the screen, and you use your + and - (vertically and horizontally, respectively) to stretch or unstretch the display to fit your display properly. Now because of this, I'd recommend performing the action in 720, although your console may automatically set the display to 720p since this is the limitation of the game, but just to be safe try it.

I hope this helps if you can find a setting like that, again look for references in your settings to the word "DPI-Scaling" or "Dots Per Inch", etc.

Thanks for the info, will try it out on the weekend. Would be a great relief to see everything in the edges of the screen lol. I do not get why all the Games I played in the last Years on PS3 never had this kind of problem. FF14ARR seems to be special in every possible way......
