Yours indeed sounds like a very odd issue because servers have been shutdown/restarted/switched off from Phase 4 to EA (And obviously loads of times during EA). I know it's a frustrating thing for me to suggest, but have you tried deleting the folder in My Documents/My Games/etc. Be careful when doing this as it's also where your character creation data is stored. Also perhaps a reinstall of the game?
