During beta and a little after release there was a program that let you go fullscreen and alt tab, unfortunately SE sent them a cease and desist letter which forced the author to remove it.

The main reason this is needed is because crossfirex and sli will only work in fullscreen, and alt-tab from full screen is standard these days mainly because of thse technologies. I think this should be added as soon as possible and it should be a reletively small change.
Alt+Tab along with an in game configuration is most certainly needed. Partly because its quite useful, and partly because it's been a standard for PC games more than 10 years.
I second this. ALT+TAB is standard in PC games, and honestly it's absence makes the game look even less polished than it is.
I would also review the whole loss of focus problem, as there are, nowadays, still a lot of people that get the DirectX error even when they do NOT alt+tab.
Nvidia 3D doesn't work (yet) in windowed mode, and in windowed mode the performance is terrible.
So yes, full screen alt + tab without crashing would be nice.

I didnt care much for this but as I now use a laptop a lot of the time I'd really like to see this fixed.
Not only just for the performance increase but when stuff like Windows Update pops up like "YOU U WANNA RESTART BRAH" it minimizes the game ><
Not to mention that anti-virus software may pop up a scheduled scan/database update window, or some other application you're using may choose to let you know it downloaded some minor update - and crash the game in the process. Plus the accidental WIN-key/multimedia keyboard presses. Oh and if you've got some instant messenger like MSN, ICQ and such running in background it's a pain as well.
Simply put, alt-tab crashing needs to go.
One of the reasons i stopped playing ffxi was fullscreen![]()
I don't think it is a technical problem at all, it's just some weird policy at SE not to allow alt+tab.
Every game in the world that goes out on the market these days allow users to do so, you gotta live with your time SE.
