I'm in favor of them naming it Materia myself.

Using the whole "It's already been used" argument is moot. As people have mentioned Magicite is recurring. Crystals are recurring. Chocobos are recurring. Materia can be recurring as well, and I think it will give the game a much needed Final Fantasy feel.

It also might help draw in a larger FF crowd. "FFXIV has a Materia system now? I might have to take a look at that."

...And on another note, the system sounds quite interesting. Can't wait to hear more.

I'm excited for this new system, regardless of what name it'll end up. I really hope Materia can give new traits or abilities and not just stat increases.

If it's exactly like Materia they should keep the name.. and if so, wow that would be the best part about FFXIV. But if it's like gemming in WoW.. then.. do not take FFVII's name in vain! Sayeth the Lord.

I don't think it COULD be just like FF7 since that was the entire battle system. If I could put in counter attack materia and poison materia into my weapon THEN it would be materia. Anything less than that should just be a different name!

I like that they are using the name Materia as an example for the system but at the same time if they want to use that name then I hope they make sure it’s similar to FFVII and not some broken new system :P

My idea would be similar to FFVIIs the only downside being you wouldn't let the materia give skills or abilities, only stats, traits, and bonuses.

I have to thank Square-Enix for the amazing job they have done recreating Final Fantasy XIV from Scratch. Especially the inclusion of Missing Genders which we petitioned for in good faith. This was proof to us players that the Developers are truly Sympathetic to our requests and that being honest and vocal can pay off with the amazing characters we have who are Female Roegadyn, Male Miqote, and Female Highlanders. Thank You SE, Thank You Community Team, Thank You Yoshi-P.

Ditto. Materia rocks, a lot of people can identify with the name, and already have a gist of what it does right off the bat if you were to tell someone that doesn't play. I love it.

I just hope that Astral and Umbral are on these things. LISTEN TO THIS DEV, LISTEN LISTEN LISTEN. (sorry) As of now THM have no clear way of increasing astral or umbral affinity. 80% of THM spells are umbral, so for a THM to be as great as they want stacking umbral affinity would make sense. They could easily do that with this new materia system ^^

I thought Raising the three elements that aligned with Umbral on the Elemental Wheel raised Umbral.

Also an interesting thing about materia is that they were growing as you earned points with them equipped.
