Sounds a little like Augments from FFXI (Mirke Wardecors anyone?)
If they do add this I would like a bit of lore that justifies it, that is what separates FF from other games (maybe besides a bioware rpg but do NOT get me started on their last two :[), is the lore.
I do hope they change the name since its mostly a 7 thing and lore-wise materia is something you're not supposed to be farming because of environmental concerns.
Materia isn't what was farmed in FF7, it was a bi-product of leaks of the Life Stream hitting the surface. It had nothing to do with Shin-Ra, Make Reactors, or their impact on the environment. Reactors did cause them to be produced more often and Shin-Ra did develope a way to produce them on their own outside of Mako Fountains (Areas where Lifestream is rich in the soil and leaks upwards.) and reactors.
As for FFXIV. They can easily push lore that says the Aether that flows through the planet and allows Teleportation to work too and from Aetheryte Stones has a bi-product that allows crystals to form in rock, grass, trees, or underwater. And DOL have become adept slowly at locating and harvesting these stone for use by DOH to make Materia Crystals.
The fact is they can only call Crystals so many things. But they all mean the same thing in the lore of FF.
Crystal, Magicite, Materia, Have been the three most prominent.
Crystal is already in use. Magicite was used heavily in FFXI so they might want to mix it up for XIV which really leave Materia for this system as far as I see it.

I have to thank Square-Enix for the amazing job they have done recreating Final Fantasy XIV from Scratch. Especially the inclusion of Missing Genders which we petitioned for in good faith. This was proof to us players that the Developers are truly Sympathetic to our requests and that being honest and vocal can pay off with the amazing characters we have who are Female Roegadyn, Male Miqote, and Female Highlanders. Thank You SE, Thank You Community Team, Thank You Yoshi-P.

And that could leave plots open -- 'Bad guy' abusing stuff to get Materia
Plus this is FF14 which cut in half should mean its two FF7's stuffed together... lol math.

agree on cairdeas idea.
Materia doesn't exist in Eorzea...?
Oh well when you put it like that...
But don't you feel like they're just clutching at straws now?
They want to restore our confidence in them, and yet by giving in to every demand, we might enjoy the additions, but we cannot remain confident in their originality nor in their artistic vision.
